American Studies Center - OSA UW

American Studies Center - OSA UW American Studies Center, University of Warsaw / Ośrodek Studiów Amerykańskich, Uniwersytet Warszawski culture, politics and society. and postgraduate programs.

From literature to political science, from film to economy, from history to popular culture: the American Studies Center offers interdisciplinary perspectives on the U.S. The American Studies Center of University of Warsaw (ASC UW) is one of the biggest American Studies departments in Europe. The Center is a part of the Institute of the Americas and Europe (IAiE), together with the Center for Lati

n American Studies (CESLA) and the Center for European Regional and Local Studies (EUROREG). The ASC employs over 20 faculty from Poland and the United States and provides excellent research facilities for students, scholars and professionals interested in the field. The ASC Library is the largest American Studies library in Central Europe, containing a sizable microfiche and microfilm collection and a wide array of recent academic publications. The ASC runs interdisciplinary B.A., M.A. All courses are taught in English. The ASC promotes American Studies in Poland by conducting research, hosting conferences, debates and various events open to the general public. It also publishes a series of ASC monographs and its own periodical The Americanist, which is peer reviewed and open to submissions from scholars of different nationalities;

The American Studies Center is a place of dynamic learning. We respect our students and listen to them. We believe that true understanding is reached in open dialogue, by confronting controversy and coming to one’s own conclusions. As a student, you will be exposed to many views on every issue, many readings of every text - it is up to you to come up with your own. Rather than forced to memorize endless facts, you will be asked - again and again - to read and think for yourself. In the process, you will find that many ideas you have taken for granted are up for debate. www.asc.uw.edu.pl

🎉 Congratulations to Prof. Karolina Krasuska 🎉

✨ Prof. Karolina Krasuska has been awarded an IDUB "Research Impulses" grant - one of very few in the humanities within this multidisciplinary call!

📚 The project, another step in her research on transnational literatures, is titled "Diasporic Networks: Reconfiguring Soviet-Born Jewish Literature in North America and Germany."

🔍 It investigates these networks through the focus on three axes: texts, culture, and geo-politics, to theorize the diasporic as linked to Jewish Soviet legacies in conversation with decolonization and post-Holocaust Jewishness that has been used to counter a narrative based on competing histories and memories.

🌍 The development of a scientific international cooperation of the PI and a UW PhD student with three top-tier senior international team members will lead, among others, to the preparation of a book proposal package (proposal plus select chapters for a prestigious press) and a public event to take place in December at the Center.

📸 The recent conference at the University of London that Prof. Krasuska co-organized with Prof. Stuart Taberner (University of Leeds), which the photo comes from, provided fundations for this project.

🎉🎓 Many congratulations to ASC’s own Alicja Relidzyńska on successfully defending her PhD dissertation with distinction (cum laude)!

📚 Her dissertation, “Anthropocene Nostalgia in Twenty-First-Century American Visual Culture,” was written under the dedicated supervision of Prof. Grzegorz Kość and developed with the generous support of Prof. Paweł Frelik. It examines a new form of nostalgia that Relidzyńska has identified and conceptualized. Manifested in contemporary American photography, television series, and visual art projects, Anthropocene nostalgia evokes past decades while critically reassessing them through the lens of a growing awareness of the climate crisis. 🌍

👩‍🎓 The defense was attended by distinguished members of our faculty, doctoral candidates, and Relidzyńska’s students, whose presence made the occasion even more memorable.

🎓 Aleksandra Julia Malinowska has just returned from the "Gender, Authority, and Trust in the United States" workshop held by the Heidelberg Center for American Studies of Heidelberg University. This two-day workshop served as an opportunity for participants to discuss their contributions to the upcoming edited volume on the same topic. Keep an eye out for Aleksandra's chapter on constructing literary authority in feminist manifestos! ✨

📚 In addition to the enriching conversations and beautiful views of the Castle, attendees had the opportunity to see an intimate screening of The Conductor (2021) and chat with Bernadette Wegenstein, the documentary director. 🎬

📖 Aleksandra participated in the workshop as part of the National Science Center PRELUDIUM BIS 4 grant (PI: prof. Karolina Krasuska).

🏳️‍🌈 The last days of the academic year and Pride Month saw a few members of ASC's Q***rIt team present their research at the Q***r: Present! conference in Poznań.

📚 Tomasz Basiuk, Ludmiła Janion, Anna Kurowicka, and Joanna Szymaniak discussed their findings on the transfer of q***r theory from the US to Poland between the 1990s and 2020s.

✨ Krystyna Mazur, another member of the Q***rIt team, shared her research on Barbara Hammer's work, while Magdalena Gabrysiak and Michał Doroszenko introduced the audience to their doctoral projects on feminist autotheory and discursive construction of intersexuality respectively.

🌍 The company of q***r studies scholars from Poland and abroad, keynote lectures by Dan Healey and Joanna Mizielińska, and most of all the stylish (if incredibly hot 🔥) conference venue made it a truly memorable trip.

✨ What a remarkable few days!

The 21st Professor Andrzej Bartnicki Forum for the Advanced Studies of the United States, “America and the World: A Reciprocal History of Influence and Exchange,” brought together inspiring discussions on history, ideas, and global connections.

Held on 26–28 June at Dobra 55, this year’s Forum was especially meaningful as we celebrated the 50th anniversary of the American Studies Center at the University of Warsaw alongside the 250th anniversary of the United States. Returning to its place of origin, the event honored the legacy of Professor Andrzej Bartnicki, founder of our Center and patron of the Forum.

We are deeply grateful to our distinguished keynote speakers- Brian George, Counselor for Public Diplomacy at the U.S. Embassy, Marie-Hélène Côté of the Embassy of Canada in Poland, Przemysław Balcerzyk, Director of Kosciuszko Foundation, and Ewa Czarnojan, Executive Director of Fulbright Poland- for helping us open the Forum with such insight and inspiration.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and made this event so special! 🌍
