Once more!

We are pleased and proud to share that the abstract submitted by our MD candidate, Class of 2027 Melvin Arroyo, under the mentorship of Dr. Maricarmen Colón Díaz, has been selected for the semifinals of the 2026 AMA Research Challenge. His abstract was among the top 5% of the submissions chosen to participate in the event.

Congratulations on this achievement!

Poster Symposium: Research from 1,000 medical students, residents, and international medical graduates with qualifying abstract scores has been accepted to the poster symposium.

Semifinals: Research from the 65 top-scoring abstracts has been accepted to the semifinals. Judges and AMA members will score research in the semifinals to select the top 5 to advance to the finals and compete for $10,000, presented by KeyBank.

Congratulations on a new publication under the mentorship of Dr. W. Veras

Congratulations to our graduates, Dr. Adrían A. Naoun (corresponding author) and Dr. Héctor L. Figueroa-Monsanto, who, during their fourth year of medical studies, worked under the mentorship of Dr. Wilson Veras, our Associate Dean of Biomedical Sciences and developed this exciting publication: Compressed Branching Geometry in a Bovine-Type Aortic Arch: A Morphometric Cadaveric Case Report and Systematic Review of the Literature. It was published recently in the Cureus Journal of Medical Science, Springer Nature as an open -access case report.

Our congratulations to the authors on such a detailed description of this case, the excellent figures and tables, and the thorough literature review of five databases, which identified only fourteen cadaveric studies that documented a bovine-type configuration involving the brachiocephalic trunk and left common carotid artery. Nevertheless, only a minority of them reported measurements specific to the BAA configuration.

In this report, they provided specimen-level morphometric characterization of a bovine-type aortic arch, adding quantitative detail to a cadaveric literature in which such measurements remain scarce. In their conclusion, they argue that “Anatomical variants that appear clinically silent may therefore have both hemodynamic and procedural relevance, illustrating the importance of recognizing this arch phenotype in the preoperative setting.”

“The authors gratefully acknowledge the body donors and their families for their generous contribution to the San Juan Bautista School of Medicine anatomy program. The authors also thank Anatomage® for providing access to the 3D anatomy visualization system used in the preparation of panel A for Figure 1”.
