The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) belongs to the College of Engineering. It offers undergraduate and graduate degrees for electrical engineering, and computer engineering. Electrical engineering has six areas of specialization: Control Systems, Communications/Digital Signal Processing, Electromagnetics, Electronics, Power Electronics, and Power Systems. ng has three areas of specialization: Computing Systems, Digital Signal Processing, and Hardware and Embedded Systems. At the undergraduate level, the Baccalaureate in Sciences in Electrical Engineering (BSEE), and the Baccalaureate in Sciences in Computer Engineering are offered (BSCpE). The Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering Program are fully accredited by the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET). The UPRM’s BSEE was created in the year 1928 (one of the oldest BSEE programs in the Caribbean), and it has been accredited by ABET since 1960. The UPRM’s BSCpE started in the year 1980, and it has been accredited by ABET since 1994. Currently, the ECE graduate program offers the Masters in Sciences in Electrical Engineering (MSEE), Masters in Electrical Engineering (MEEE), Masters in Sciences in Computer Engineering (MSCpE), and Masters in Computer Engineering (MECpE). The MSCpE and MECpE started on the year 1994. The MSEE and MECpE degrees require the preparation of an original thesis, whereas the MEEE and MECpE degrees require the preparation of a report related to the development of an engineering project. Also, the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering offers a Ph.D. Program in Computing Sciences and Engineering (jointly with the Mathematics Department). Finally, the Department’s research and graduate programs involve 14 laboratories, groups and centers, more than 40 graduate-level courses, 51 faculty members, about 1,200 undergraduate students and near 100 graduated students. Medidas para la continuidad académica y administrativa en el RUM

En atención al seriado R-2026-25 emitido por la Presidencia de la Universidad de Puerto Rico y en cumplimiento con la Certificación Núm. 81 (2023–2024) de la Junta de Gobierno, el Recinto Universitario de Mayagüez (RUM) ha activado medidas para asegurar la continuidad de los servicios académicos y administrativos. A partir del miércoles 6 de mayo de 2026, se activarán métodos alternos, incluyendo trabajo remoto, teletrabajo debidamente autorizado y modalidades académicas virtuales asistidas por tecnología sincrónicas y asincrónicas, conforme a las directrices institucionales vigentes.

En ese contexto, las labores académicas continuarán desarrollándose mediante métodos alternos de enseñanza, incluyendo estas modalidades asistidas por tecnología, mientras se atiende la situación que incide sobre la operación ordinaria del Recinto. Cualquier duda o pregunta debe ser consultada con los respectivos directores de departamento.

Reconocemos que este escenario presenta retos para muchos de nuestros estudiantes. Por ello, reiteramos la importancia de actuar con flexibilidad y consideración, particularmente con aquellos que puedan enfrentar limitaciones de acceso a recursos tecnológicos u otras circunstancias que afecten su participación en las actividades académicas.

De igual forma, el RUM continúa evaluando y documentando las medidas adoptadas, conforme a los requerimientos establecidos en la Certificación Núm. 81 (2023–2024), según aprobada por la Junta de Gobierno.

Por otra parte, los decanos impartirán instrucciones para el registro de asistencia para el personal que por la naturaleza de las tareas que realizan no puedan trabajar en modalidad remota.

El Recinto continuará promoviendo el diálogo y la participación de los distintos sectores, conforme a los procesos institucionales que rigen la vida universitaria.
