Summer Research Internship Program
The School of Medicine offers a ten-week research internship to qualified undergraduates considering a career in biomedical research. Generous financial support, housing, and travel are provided to participants.

UVA is committed to providing access to a broad community of current undergraduates and recent graduates, exposing them to laboratory research and familiarizing them with the types of careers within biomedical sciences.

Applications are now open for Summer 2027, with a deadline of February 1, 2027

UVA offers a ten-week Summer internship program for diverse undergraduate students in their junior/senior years considering a career in biomedical research.

Summer Internship Program (SIP)

An opportunity for students in college, graduate, and professional school to perform a summer research internship in the Intramural Research Program at the NIH.

To apply for the NIH SIP and SIP subprograms in Summer 2027, you must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. In addition, you must be one of the following:

18 years old by September 30, 2027. If you are a graduating high school senior who will be 17 years old as of June 1, 2027 but will turn 18 by September 30, 2027, your permanent home address must be located within 40 miles of an NIH campus.
AND, one of the following:

enrolled at least half-time in an accredited community college, college, or university as an undergraduate, graduate, ...

The 2027 NIH Summer Internship Program will run from Monday, May 10, 2027 to Tuesday, August 31, 2027.

The application will close on Tuesday, January 26, 2027 at 12 pm (noon) ET.

The NIH Summer Internship Program (SIP) offers research experience to high school, college, and graduate students.
