Hope Secondary School

Hope Secondary School A school to serve God and the disadvantaged youth in the community. Arabic page: King David lived on one it's mountains.

We are a Christian school that serves the wide diversity of needy and orphan youth in our area regardless of economic status, religion, or ethnic lines. Hope Secondary School is located in Beit Jala, a small town just west of Bethlehem in Palestine. Beit Jala means the ""House of Flowers"" in Persian, and is named after King Jael of Biblical times. Hope School serves Palestinian boys and girls in

grades 7-12. Hope School begun in 1962 as the Mennonite School for Boys. The primary reason for establishing the school was to provide quality education to underprivileged Palestinian boys, especially orphans. The Mennonites ran the school until 1976 when, in accordance with Mennonite missions policy, they turned control over to a local Palestinian Christian board. At that time, the students of the school voted to change the name to Hope Secondary School. Girls were also admitted to the school. Since that time Hope Secondary School has lived up to its name, giving hope to hundreds of students who otherwise would have none. Hope Secondary School students come from very disadvantaged backgrounds. The curricula include business courses--economics, bookkeeping, accounting, typing (in English and Arabic), computers, secetarial skills, business administration, and marketing, in addition to normal academic classes such as English, Arabic, science, math, and Christian education. In this way we hope to provide our students with the skills they need to make a better life for themselves and their families.

A group of UMC diaconal order from UK visited Hope School this morning. The school principal, Mr. Saba welcomed them and made a brief presentation about the school and its ministry. He showed the progress that took place at the school over the past years. He thanked God for the blessings and grace which helped the school despite of the challenges confronting our work as he said. The school is serving more than 265 vulnerable children of all ages starting from pre-school children up to grade 12th; the year which enables the students to graduate and move to university. He gave a detailed update about the newly established special education program for the slow learners and special needs . At the end the group visited the different section and facilities of the church.

"...You told us that the school investigated and found out that he was being a good son and trying to support himself and his mother by selling gum. My heart was broken again over the love and responsibility of this child. It made me rethink the child and man I saw earlier in the day. You also told us that you found a way to help the family and have the child continue to attend school. Such dedication and love. I have never forgotten this lesson.”

Christmas celebrations have begun! Santa Claus is in town! Today each elementary class shared beautiful dances, words, and songs that they've worked on all month.
You might be wondering, why are so many of the children dressed up as Old Saint Nicholas? Well, for Christians, St. Nicholas is referred to as the Father of our town, Beit Jala, because it is believed that while on his pilgrimage to the Holy Land, he lived in cave in this town. There are stories about his protection of the land and people over the years, and while not all of them can be verified, the saint remains an inspirational and important figure for the town.
Thank you to our great teachers for making this a great day for our elementary students. On Monday our secondary students will be celebrating as well... only one more exam to go!
