Ocean Campus - Summer School

Ocean Campus - Summer School S.School has as a goal to provide a detailed view about atmospheric, oceanic, and land processes in

Continental coasts are on average substantially more populated than in-land areas. The world population lives mostly at the coast, particularly in low and mid-latitudes, and this demographic concentration tends to increase, at least in the near future. The continental coastal areas represent an interface between the ocean and land, where several interconnected process, with different time and spat

ial scales, take place. Being a transitional zone between two very distinctive elements it is prone to dynamic and thermo-dynamic processes related to local oceanic and atmospheric phenomena that need to be properly studied. The Ocean Campus - Coastal Meteorology and Oceanography Summer School takes advantage of the location of Lisbon, very close to an eastern boundary current system, where, in summer, several typical atmospheric and oceanographic coastal processes occur. The possibility of gathering students and scientists with a common interest in coastal processes at the Portuguese Naval Academy, with access to meteorological and oceanographic instrumentation, and with a rapid access to the ocean and to ship time is also rather unique. The Summer School has as a goal to provide to a group of up to 44 postgraduate students, and postdocs, a detailed view about atmospheric, oceanic, and land processes in coastal regions, with a hands-on approach to point observations. The Summer School will include a 5 days intensive training period with courses by a diverse set of international lecturers, followed by a three-day ship expedition to the Berlengas Islands, 80 nautical miles North of Lisbon, on the tall-ship Creoula. The ship-cruise will have a continuous observational program, including atmosphere and ocean soundings, geological and biological sampling in the water column, and sediments retrieval. The Ocean Campus - Summer School is a joint organization by the Portuguese Naval Academy, the University of Lisbon – Faculty of Sciences, and Stockholm University – Meteorological Institute. The courses, in English, will be given at the Portuguese Naval Academy, located south Lisbon (Tagus River southern shore). The main topics of the Ocean Campus - Summer School are:
• Operational Meteorology and Oceanography - Observing Systems
• Processes and Modelling of the Ocean Margins
• Ecology of Coastal Ecosystems: Responses to Global Environ-mental Change
• Biology of Marine Larvae in Oceanic Coastal Areas
• Coastal Boundary Layer Clouds
• Coastal Oceanography
• Coastal Meteorology and Marine Atmospheric Boundary Layer Processes
• Introduction to Marine Atmospheric Boundary Layer Dynamics
• Storm Surges and Coastal Hazards
• Marine Morphosedimentary Processes
• Ocean Mesoscale Dynamics and Turbulence

The students will be lodged at the Naval Academy dorms, with meals provided at the canteen. The guest lecturers will be lodged at the Lisbon Naval Base Hotel, in the vicinity of the Naval Academy. The ship cruise will depart and return to the Lisbon Naval Base, a few hundred meters from the Naval Academy. Any questions regarding general arrangements (accommodation, payments, etc.) or academic or pedagogical issues should be addresses to the Summer School office at [email protected].
