🌊 As part of the celebrations of European Maritime Day and Blue School Day, we welcomed two 4th-grade classes from school EB1 do Maninho (Vila Nova de Gaia) to CEPAM/ECOMARE for a day dedicated to discovering marine ecosystems.

From exploring the Aveiro Lagoon and observing bivalves and other marine organisms to visiting the tropical aquarium and participating in creative activities organized by the Ocean Ambassadors of Escola Azul da José Afonso de Aveiro (Aveiro), students had the opportunity to learn more about the biodiversity of the Aveiro Lagoon and the importance of its conservation 🐚

This activity also included outreach actions from the UNTIE and DETECT_LINE projects (CESAM/DBIO/UA) 🔬✨

Our group has a new PhD 🥳

Today, Ana Cabral presented her thesis entitled "Relevance of lipid, elemental and isotopic profiles of seahorses from aquaculture for their valorization and conservation" 🌊🐠

Supervised by Prof. Ricardo Calado, this work contributes to a better understanding of the role of biochemical signatures in the valorization and conservation of aquaculture-produced seahorses.

Our researchers 👩‍🔬 published a study exploring how maternal lipid🧪 allocation varies during early in the pink spiny (Palinurus mauritanicus) 🦞

Using and fatty acid analysis, we found that:

🧬 Maternal lipid provisioning is not homogeneous across embryos;
⬆️ Embryos from posterior pleopods showed higher phospholipid and PUFA contents;
🌊 Essential fatty acids such as EPA and DHA varied significantly across embryo locations;
🔬 These differences may influence embryo quality, hatching success, and larval performance.

These findings provide new insights into reproductive and may support future strategies for sustainable and broodstock management 🦐

Our latest study on estuarine and aquaculture is out now!

In this work, we explored how 🌡 and 🧂affect the resilience of these small but important organisms — which are gaining attention as promising resources for sustainable 🦐.

🔎 What we found:

👉Some species are more heat-tolerant than others
👉Salinity plays a key role in shaping thermal tolerance
👉Challenging conditions can impact growth and energy balance

💡 These findings are important for developing more resilient systems, especially under changing environmental conditions 🌊.

Our researchers👨‍🔬 have just published a new breeding protocol of the Berghia stephanieae🌊. In this work, our team improved upon existing protocols, increasing production yield, decreasing workload, and minimizing inbreeding🐠. This improved and standardized breeding method will help support this nudibranch's commercial production while also ensuring a reliable source of specimens for experimental research.

Final Meeting of the PUFApods Project 🌱

On the 4th and 5th of May, researchers and partners involved in the project gathered at for the project’s Final Meeting and Workshop.
Across the two days, participants discussed the main scientific results and outcomes achieved throughout the project, while also promoting interactive sessions focused on the PUFApods value chain, future perspectives, and collaborative scientific ideas.

Celebrating a new ’s graduate in our group! 👨‍🎓🥳

Last week, on April 30th, our Master’s student, Manuel Albuquerque, successfully defended his thesis entitled “Fatty acid profile of Gammarus locusta newly hatched offspring from wild and from adults farmed on mono-specific agriculture sidestream diets.” under the supervision of Dr. Ricardo Calado and Felisa Rey.

The Lipidomics Laboratory of the Mass Spectrometry Centre of the University of Aveiro participated in the event, held on the 29th and 30th of April, with the activity “À descoberta de lipidos: o Lipodrome em ação”. 🧪🎲
This activity featured the board game , developed by several researchers involved in the , and welcomed a diverse group of participants, including middle and high school students.
Through the game, participants had the opportunity to explore the relationship between food choices and health, understanding how different can contain that are either essential or potentially harmful to our well-being.
This initiative allowed the CESAM-UA Lipidomics Laboratory and the EpiLipidNET COST Action to further contribute to science communication and public engagement in the fascinating world of lipids.
