Word of the day: Networking!

For the second year running, INL's Early-Stage Research Association organised a career fair bringing junior researchers face-to-face with industry, academic, and entrepreneurship partners.

Check the best moments below!

The brilliant minds walking our campus today were once small in stature, but never in imagination.

Their dreams were always big enough to bring them here.

Here's to every child, and the wonder they never lose.

Happy Children's Day.

Windows could be energy-generators in disguise, at least that's what our new study on semi-transparent solar cells tells us!

Our first International Day of Light celebration was back in 2016.
And we haven't missed a single year since.

Under the organisation of INL group leader Jana Nieder, we marked the event's 10th edition, last week.

What started as a moment to mark the occasion has grown into an anticipated annual event, bringing researchers and students together on campus to explore the frontiers of quantum science, photonics, and beyond.

This year's edition took on the theme "The Dark Side of the Moon", inviting participants to explore the fascinating interplay between light and darkness.

The afternoon featured talks on nanotechnology for space, quantum communication and computation with light, and materials for energy harvesting; complemented by lab visits, sunspot telescope observations, hands-on experiments, and even a quiz.

Ten editions in, the curiosity is still very much alive.
Check out the highlights below.

Where is battery technology headed?

This question drove two days of remarkable conversation at the Battery Science & Innovation Forum, held on 20–21 May, right here on our campus at INL.

Researchers, industry professionals, policymakers, and students gathered to explore the full battery value chain: from advanced materials and cell design to manufacturing scale-up, circular economy, and system integration.

Together with Sociedade Portuguesa de Materiais, CENTI - Centre for Nanotechnology and Advanced Materials, and dst group , we tackled one of the defining challenges of our time: accelerating the energy transition.

To our speakers, presenters, poster contributors, scientific committee, and partners: thank you for making the forum so enriching!

How do nanoparticles interact with the human body?

Can the safety assessment of the ever-expanding variety of nanomaterials be standardized?

At what dose does a nanomaterial become a potential risk?

A group of INL researchers has dedicated their work to answering these questions.

Together, they compiled their methods, tools, and computational approaches to predict and manage nanomaterial risks into a single open-access book.

Published in 2025 and edited by INL Group Leader Ernesto Alfaro-Moreno and Fiona Murphy, "Nanosafety: A Comprehensive Approach to Assess Nanomaterial Exposure on the Environment and Health" brings together contributions from researchers across the Pastrana, Espiña, and Alfaro-Moreno groups.

Today, some of its authors tell us why the field is so relevant.

Bacteria leaving fingerprints?

Sounds like the plot for a sci-fi movie, but it's actually the concept behind INL's new study developed with INESC TEC under the SMARTgNOSTICS project.
