The Polytechnic Institute of Bragança (IPB) is a Portuguese Higher Education Public Institution with 7000 undergraduate and master students, embracing a wide area of knowledge and technology, including agriculture sciences, arts and sports, education and teachers’ training, informatics and engineering, administration and management, health, communication and tourism. The IPB belongs to the Europea

n Network for Universities of Applied Sciences (UASnet), which main objectives include the transferability of professional skills and the integration of applied research in their professional and technological education mission. IPB has also an internationalization programme with widely recognized success, including the annual mobility of more than 900 incoming and outgoing students and 200 teaching staff members, as the result of the collaboration with several higher education institutions from all over the World. Nowadays the IPB is a multicultural institution, where 15% of its students are international students. In 2011, the European Commission has awarded the ECTS Label to the IPB, acknowledging the quality of the information provided in terms of the degree programmes offered and the management of student mobility within the European Higher Education Area. The purpose of the Diploma Supplement (DS) is to provide sufficient independent data to improve the international transparency and fair academic and professional recognition of qualifications. Besides the academic programmes taught in the Portuguese language, the IPB also offers bachelor and master programmes fully lectured in English, as well as Portuguese language and culture courses for foreign students.

O Instituto Politécnico de Bragança manifesta grande satisfação com a aprovação hoje, 24 de fevereiro, no Parlamento, da Lei que consagra a possibilidade de concessão do grau de doutor no subsistema de ensino superior politécnico e o uso da designação "universidades politécnicas" em língua portuguesa e inglesa, através da alteração da Lei de Bases do Sistema Educativo e do Regime Jurídico das instituições do ensino superior (RJIES).

A Lei foi hoje aprovada com os votos favoráveis de todos os grupos parlamentares, com apenas o voto contra de seis deputados, e uma ovação final. Recebeu, portanto, a unanimidade de todos os partidos, o que revela o amplo consenso desta alteração na sociedade portuguesa.

Com esta alteração, as instituições politécnicas passam a poder conferir o grau de doutor. Podem também utilizar a designação Universidade Politécnica de imediato em língua inglesa (Polytechnic University). Em língua portuguesa, o uso da designação Universidade Politécnica f**a condicionada às regras que vierem a ser definidas na revisão do RJIES, até ao final de 2024.

As regras atualmente em vigor para poder ministrar doutoramentos obrigam à existência de um corpo docente adequado e de centros de investigação avaliados pela FCT com a classif**ação de Muito Bom ou Excelente. O Politécnico de Bragança tem atualmente dois centros com a avaliação de Excelente, pelo que iniciará de imediato a preparação das suas propostas de cursos de doutoramento, que submeterá à aprovação da Agência de Avaliação (A3Es) em setembro /outubro de 2023.

A utilização imediata da designação "Polytechnic University of Bragança" permitirá, também, uma muito importante melhoria da sua projeção e atratividade internacional.

O Politécnico de Bragança quer expressar o seu reconhecimento a todos os deputados, mas muito particularmente aos eleitos pelos círculos de Bragança e Vila Real, que muito empenhada e convictamente abraçaram esta causa.
