UNU-EGOV and the Municipality of Guimarães worked together through the AI4PA initiative to better understand how municipal public servants perceive Artificial Intelligence and its impact on their daily work.

The initiative combined a survey of municipal employees with a capacity-development programme covering digital transformation, responsible AI, AI impact, and practical applications.

The survey gathered 150 responses, while the training programme engaged public servants through both online and hands-on learning activities, helping strengthen AI awareness and skills within the municipality.

The first webinar, "Digital Public Infrastructure: Establishing Trusted Government Platforms", will take place on 21 October 2026, from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm (Tashkent time).

The session will be led by Pedro H. Tavares, an independent consultant from Portugal, with contributions from discussants Andrew Beklemishev (CADGov Steering Committee) and Zoran Jordanoski, PhD Jordanoski (UNU-EGOV).

The webinar will explore how governments can establish a trusted digital public infrastructure by connecting digital identity systems, interoperable data exchange mechanisms and shared digital services. The discussion will also address institutional responsibilities, data governance, service design, trust, security and inclusion, drawing on international experiences and practical implementation approaches.

💭 As Artificial Intelligence continues to expand, so do the energy demands required to power it sustainably.

At AI4SDG 2026, Imen Ghedhioui, Senior Research Associate at UNU-EGOV, presented a new research paper co-authored with João Martins, Morten Meyerhoff Nielsen, and Soumaya Ben Dhaou, examining the intersection of AI growth, energy security, and digital governance.

The study explores the potential of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) to support AI infrastructure across strategic digital corridors in the Middle East and Africa, highlighting the need to better align energy, digital, and AI governance.
