• A new era for RUN-EU founding partner IPLeiria •

We are happy to announce that the Polytechnic University of Leiria (IPLeiria) is now the University of Leiria and Oeste (ULO).

The university has over forty years of growth and success, and this change brings new chances to improve education, research, innovation, and regional development in Portugal and Europe.

As a founding and co-leading member of RUN-EU, ULO will keep working toward our shared goal of building universities that look to the future and stay connected to their regions.

This change brings an ambitious vision for the future, including new Knowledge and Innovation Communities that connect education, research, innovation, and regional development in Leiria, Peniche, and Caldas da Rainha.

ULO remains strongly committed to working together, driving innovation, and making a difference.

• Celebrating UPCA’s new chapter in higher education •

We are delighted to welcome the Polytechnic University of Cávado and Ave (UPCA) – the new designation of our long-standing RUN-EU partner, formerly known as IPCA.

Following Portugal’s revised legal framework for higher education, the institution has officially transitioned from Polytechnic Institute to Polytechnic University.

This milestone recognises the institution’s development and the quality of its work in education, research, and innovation, and strengthens its role in Portugal’s higher education landscape.

For RUN-EU, this marks a new chapter in a strong partnership. UPCA remains a key member of our European community, supporting collaborative education and research, regional innovation, and new opportunities for students, staff, and stakeholders across Europe.

Congratulations to the whole UPCA community on this significant achievement!

The second edition of the RUN-EU INNOTHON brought together 340 participants from all ten RUN-EU partner universities, including university students and pre-university learners, to develop innovative solutions for Smart Cities and Smart Villages.

Working in multidisciplinary teams, participants explored regional challenges related to:
🌱 Sustainability
🤖 Digital transformation
🚲 Smart mobility
🌍 Environmental protection
🧘 Community wellbeing

One of this year's highlights was an international webinar bringing together the winning teams from across the Alliance, providing a platform to share ideas, exchange experiences and strengthen collaboration across Europe.

By encouraging creativity, teamwork and entrepreneurial thinking, the RUN-EU INNOTHON continues to empower young people to become active contributors to smarter and more sustainable European regions.

The second edition of RUN-EU Innovation Day brought together universities, businesses, public authorities, schools, civil society organisations and citizens across the ten RUN-EU partner regions.

While each university developed a programme tailored to its regional innovation ecosystem, all events shared the same objective: strengthening collaboration and promoting innovation as a driver of sustainable regional development.

Hosted by the Politécnico de Leiria in May, the RUN-EU Innovation Meets Regions on Blue Economy brought together more than 250 researchers, students, policymakers, entrepreneurs and regional stakeholders to explore how collaboration can support sustainable regional development.

The programme combined research, innovation and regional engagement through:

💡 Technology showcases and research workshops
🤝 Company visits and networking opportunities
🌊 Activities integrated into the Peniche Biennial of the Sea

The 5th RUN-EU ICARUS Conference – International Conference on Applied Research with Business and Society will take place online on 2 October 2026, hosted by the Technological University of the Shannon (TUS), Ireland.
