NOVA IMS was among the five institutions recognized by Esri Portugal for more than 25 years of collaboration during the Encontro de Utilizadores da Esri, held at the Centro Cultural de Belém in Lisbon.

The award was received by Miguel de Castro Neto, Dean of NOVA IMS, and Marco Painho, Full Professor at NOVA IMS, who plays a key role in advancing education and research in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) at the School.

Over the years, GIS has evolved, opening new possibilities for understanding our world, connecting data with geography, and making better-informed decisions.

This recognition marks an important milestone in a partnership that continues to connect academia and geospatial technology.

Thank you, Esri Portugal, for 25 years of collaboration. Here's to what comes next!

This year, NOVA IMS joined the European Researchers’ Night in Lisbon and Oeiras, bringing research closer to the public through hands-on experiences, projects and technology.

In Lisbon, our Research Center invited visitors to explore two different applications of data. Through GEOJO, they stepped into the role of investigative journalists, using maps, satellite images and environmental data to uncover and tell a story. In another experience, AI, Data Science and eye tracking showed how research can help make health communication clearer, more personalized and inclusive.

In Oeiras, Nova Blockchain Lab turned the event into a treasure hunt: visitors searched for NFC tags and collected tokens they could exchange for prizes, gaining hands-on experience with blockchain technology. NOVA Cidade | Urban Analytics Lab showed how urban data can help build smarter, more sustainable cities, and brought an interactive AI game in which an avatar mirrored visitors’ movements.

Different fields, one common thread: using data and technology to better understand real-world challenges and explore new ways to address them.

NOVA IMS is the first institution in Portugal to receive the ACEEU Entrepreneurial University Accreditation.

The accreditation recognises an entrepreneurial model that runs across the School: from strategy and leadership to teaching, research, support structures, collaboration with organisations and the ability to turn knowledge into economic and societal value.

NOVA IMS met all 15 accreditation standards. In six, it was rated Excellent, meaning it exceeded the ACEEU standard.

The results are also visible beyond the assessment itself. Over the past five years, NOVA IMS students and alumni have founded 60 startups and one spin-off, while 2,500+ people have taken part in entrepreneurship programmes promoted by the School.

This accreditation recognises something that has been built over time by students, alumni, faculty, researchers, staff and partners.

Congratulations to everyone who makes NOVA IMS what it is.
