The results of the Corporate Volunteering Study in Portugal will be presented by BRU-Iscte researcher Ana Patrícia Duarte on 29 October 2026 at the 5th edition of 'Construir Pontes | Parcerias Sustentáveis entre Empresas e Organizações de Economia Social' [Building Bridges | Sustainable Partnerships between Companies and Social Economy Organisations], organised by GRACE – Empresas Responsáveis.

The event will take place at Iscte - Instituto Universitário de Lisboa, from 14:00 to 17:45, in the Afonso de Barros Auditorium (Building 3, Floor 1).

The Corporate Volunteering Study in Portugal is being developed by GRACE in partnership with BSI_Iscte – Business for Social Impact, a knowledge transfer centre within the Business Research Unit (BRU-Iscte) in collaboration with the Iscte Business School.

Launched in May 2026, the study maps the current state of corporate volunteering in Portugal, examining its level of implementation in companies, the motivations for and barriers to its adoption, the most widely used models, employee engagement, social impact measurement, and key future trends and challenges, bringing together different levels of experience to provide a comprehensive and representative view of the sector, generating knowledge to support more effective corporate volunteering strategies.

On 25 September, BRU-Iscte took part in European Researchers’ Night 2026 (NEI 2026) at the National Science and Natural History Museum in Lisbon, with two activities exploring new ways of thinking about, and experiencing, environmental challenges and urban futures:

🌱 Nature Futures: City Therapy – a cooperative board game, featuring a map of Lisbon that allowed participants to take on the role of ‘urban doctors’ and prescribe Nature-based Solutions based on different locations’ ecological data. The game was accompanied by an explanation of the concept of Nature-based Solutions and a presentation of the Nature Futures research project, by researchers Catarina Roseta Palma, João Faria and BRU-Iscte research manager Mafalda Casais.

🥽 From Reaction to Action: Virtual Reality for Environmental Awareness – an activity developed by researchers Beatriz Brito, Mariana Berga Rodrigues and Sandra Loureiro where visitors were invited to engage in an immersive Virtual Reality (VR) experience designed to promote sustainable behaviors and foster climate change awareness.

Participants also completed a 10-question quiz assessing their awareness of environmental challenges and the importance of protecting ecosystems. Overall, general knowledge was strong, with 70% answering at least seven questions correctly. However, only one in five knew what proportion of the Earth's land is covered by forest, and fewer than a third knew the approximate number of tree species. Finally, 95.7% valued hands-on experiences for learning about sustainability, underlining the potential of virtual and mixed reality to make distant natural environments feel closer and more accessible.

👉 BRU-Iscte researcher Aristides Ferreira took part in the ISTAR-Iscte activity Mission: People 5.0 – Intelligent Digitalisation of People Management, which challenged visitors to discover how artificial intelligence is reinventing recruitment. Visitors applied for a job by playing a game built around missions, challenges and decisions. Behind each step, AI and machine learning algorithms built a competency profile with a scientific rigour that traditional methods can hardly match.
