Dear colleagues and friends,

Sadly, this post is to announce the last session of the Permanent Seminar of Philosophy of Science organised by the Centre for Philosophy of Science of the University of Lisbon (CFCUL), on December 17 at 3pm Lisbon time.

Starting from the 1st of January 2025 CFCUL will cease its activities, due to a decision of its host institution, the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon, whose Direction has fully embraced a mercantile and myopic vision of university and science.

Through an administrative decision they put an end to twenty years of research and teaching of the only Centre for Philosophy of Science in Portugal, and all the efforts to convince them to change their mind were useless.

In this final session of the Permanent Seminar we'll outline the work developped at CFCUL over the years and point to its lasting legacy, questioning the reasons that lead to its dissolution.

We hope to see you there, in person or online.

The Genotype-Phenotype map is a conceptual and modeling tool that represents development in the context of evolution. Despite this central role in contemporary evolutionary research, the Genotype-Phenotype map has barely been addressed from a philosophical perspective. In order to promote a philosophy of evolution more aware of the putative centrality of this important research tool, this workshop gathers evolutionary biologists and philosophers interested in the notion.

"An introduction to conditionals and their proof theory"
Marianna Girlando (ILLC, University of Amsterdam)

Abstract
Conditional logics enrich the language of classical propositional logic with a two-places modal operator, the conditional, suitable to represent fine-grained notions of conditionality, such as counterfactual statements, non-monotonic inferences, and conditional belief assertions. Semantic studies of conditionals date back to the 1970s, with the seminal works of Stalnaker, D. K. Lewis and Chellas. Since then, various classes of models capturing conditionals have been developed and extensively studied. In contrast, the proof theory of conditional logics has been developed only in recent years, relying on the proof-theoretic techniques employed for modal logics. Specifically, to define analytic proof systems for modal logics, two main approaches have been developed: the labelled approach enriches the language of sequent calculus with semantic information, while the structured approach employs additional structural connectives in the calculus. To this latter approach belong, e.g., nested sequents and hypersequents.
After introducing conditional logics and their semantics, that I will define in terms of neighborhood models, I will present sequent calculi for conditional logics belonging both to the labelled and to the structured approach. Namely, I will present a labelled sequent calculus, modularly capturing a large family of conditional systems by internalising their semantics, and a nested-style sequent calculus, featuring a structural connective representing neighborhoods of the model. I will then compare the two calculi and their properties.
(This talk is based on joint work with: Bjoern Lellmann, Sara Negri, Nicola Olivetti and Gian Luca Pozzato.)

AI face filters are automated photo editing tools that use artificial intelligence and computer vision to detect facial features and change them. Widespread use of these filters has raised concern due to their potentially damaging psychological effects, especially in relation to body image and self-perception. In this talk, I examine different effects (both positive and negative) that interacting with AI beauty filters can have on self-perception, and in particular, mirror gazing. I also examine some potential effects of this practice in the perception of others.

We argue that the common epistemic frameworks in the literature largely misrepresent the nature of scientific reasoning and knowledge, and propose an alternative epistemic framework that is intended to represent them more adequately. The literature on scientific reasoning focuses on propositional knowledge and conscious inferential reasoning, largely overlooking or marginalizing the role that non-propositional epistemic resources and unconscious, non-inferential reasoning play in shaping the nature of scientific knowledge. Inductive reasoning is characterized in logical terms. The idea is that, ideally, the relation between the evidence and the conclusions of an inductive inference should be logical, and that this ideal is best realized when such an inference takes a deductive form. It is thus common to call the system of rules that should govern rational inductive reasoning ‘inductive logic’. We argue that each of these characteristics restricts the scope of integrating the central role that non-propositional epistemic resources, such as instincts, intuitions, and know-how, play in scientific reasoning and knowledge. We then propose a new epistemic framework that places instincts, intuitions, and know-how at centre stage and where the foundations of scientific reasoning is conceived as psychological rather than logical.
