Atopic dermatitis goes far beyond what we can see on the skin. Behind its visible signs lies an often invisible physical, emotional and social burden.
This year, World Atopic Eczema Day calls on us to , following the recognition of skin diseases as a global public health priority by the 78th World Health Assembly.

At the CBIOS - Formulation Strategies & Nanosolutions Lab, research on atopic dermatitis has been ongoing, with a particular focus on epidermal barrier dysfunction.

Through the BIOMATNANO4AD project and subsequent research, our team has explored innovative lipid-based nanosystems and bioinspired materials to support the skin barrier and improve topical therapeutic strategies, while considering their performance, safety and sustainability.
Because tackling atopic dermatitis means looking beyond its visible manifestations — and transforming scientific knowledge into better solutions for patients.

🔬 O CBIOS recebeu jovens cientistas! 🧪

Entre os dias 6 e 10 de julho, o CBIOS recebeu alunos do 3.º ciclo no âmbito do programa Ocupação Científica de Jovens nas Férias 2026, promovido pela Ciência Viva.

Durante esta semana, os alunos tiveram a oportunidade de conhecer melhor o trabalho desenvolvido no CBIOS, contactar com a investigação científica e participar em atividades práticas, descobrindo um pouco mais sobre o mundo da ciência.
Foi uma semana de aprendizagem, curiosidade e partilha, que esperamos ter contribuído para despertar o interesse destes jovens pela Ciência e pela Investigação! 🌱🔬

🌍 New publication | CBIOS × MED

A new study by Leandro Oliveira (CBIOS, Universidade Lusófona) and Maria Raquel Lucas (MED, University of Évora) proposes an integrated framework connecting the six pillars of food security: availability, access, utilisation, stability, agency and sustainability.
The study highlights how governance, technological innovation, climate resilience, circular economy and social inclusion can contribute to more equitable and sustainable food systems.
This CBIOS–MED collaboration provides a policy-oriented approach to support food system transformation and the Sustainable Development Goals.

We are pleased to share CBIOS latest publication in Pharmaceutics: “TransfersomILs: A Synergy to Boost the Skin Delivery of Hydroxycinnamic Acids”

This work explores TransfersomILs, innovative hybrid nanosystems combining transfersomes with cholinium-based ionic liquids, as a strategy to improve the topical delivery of hydroxycinnamic acids — caffeic, p-coumaric, and ferulic acids.

Our study demonstrated that the incorporation of ionic liquids into transfersomes can:

✔ Improve the physicochemical properties of the nanosystems

✔ Increase the association efficiency and loading capacity of hydroxycinnamic acids

✔ Enhance their permeation across both sylastic and human epidermal membranes

✔ Maintain good compatibility with human keratinocytes

Importantly, the results highlight a synergistic effect between transfersomes and cholinium-based ionic liquids, supporting TransfersomILs as a versatile platform to enhance the topical delivery of poorly water-soluble bioactive compounds.
This work also represents another step forward in our research on ionic liquids as functional ingredients to improve the performance of topical drug delivery systems.

📢 New Publication Alert!

We are delighted to share our latest publication in Nutrients:
"Fast-Food Consumption Frequency, Food-Choice Motivations, and Mediterranean Diet Adherence in Young Football Athletes."

Although adherence to the Mediterranean diet was generally high, more frequent fast-food consumption was associated with less healthy dietary habits, including lower fruit and vegetable intake and higher consumption of sweets and pastries. The findings also highlight the role of health-related motivations and restaurant-choice autonomy in shaping food choices among young athletes.

📢 New CBIOS Publication!

CBIOS researcher João Gregório, in co-authorship with Mélanie Raimundo Maia, has just published the article "Designing a Modular Digital Health Curriculum for Pharmacy Education: A Stakeholder-Driven Expert Workshop Study" in the journal Frontiers in Public Health.

With contributions from 30 experts from 13 European countries, the study presents a modular framework for integrating digital health competencies into pharmacy education, including artificial intelligence, digital literacy, electronic health records, tele-health, and ethical and regulatory issues.

🧠🔬 New publication from CBIOS! Nuno Saraiva’s team studied a family of ion channels in glioma, a type of brain tumour, and found that different members are linked to patient outcomes in different ways. A step forward in understanding these challenging tumours!

CBIOS was represented at the 3rd Net4Brain COST Meeting in Istanbul by Nuno Saraiva, who delivered an invited oral presentation entitled “Control of glioma cell fate by a Golgi ion channel”.

We are pleased to share that CBIOS – Universidade Lusófona was represented at the Skin Forum Annual Meeting 2026 in Malmö, Sweden, through an invited presentation by Dr. Catarina Pereira-Leite.

The talk, "Entoingredients: Evidence-Based Potential or Overhyped Trend in Skincare?", explored the current scientific evidence surrounding insect-derived ingredients for skincare applications, discussing both their opportunities and the challenges that remain before their wider adoption in skincare.

The presentation showcased research developed through the collaboration between CBIOS and , exploring the potential of Black Soldier Fly oil as a promising sustainable ingredient for skin applications. The discussion addressed the potential of entoingredients, formulation challenges, skin health applications, and the importance of robust scientific evidence to support their translation into skincare products.

We thank the Skin Forum programme committee for the invitation and the opportunity to contribute to this international discussion on the future of skin research. We also acknowledge for its valued collaboration in advancing research on sustainable ingredients.
