🇵🇹 Norberto Mourão secured Portugal's eighth European medal in canoeing, seven of which have been won by the athlete himself. His third consecutive European title in the VL2 class cements his place at the top of the discipline in Europe. Mourão has also become the first and only athlete to win three consecutive VL2 titles, surpassing Great Britain's Nicholas Heald, who claimed back-to-back titles in 2012 and 2013.

🇵🇹 Maria Rei represented Portugal in the K1 5.000m event and achieved the country's best-ever result in the discipline. The Portuguese paddler finished fifth after spending much of the race among the leading group. With this performance, she surpassed Portugal's previous best result in the event, set by Olympic athlete Beatriz Gomes at Trasona 2010, where she finished seventh.

🇵🇹 By winning the bronze medal in the K1 1000 metres, Fernando Pimenta once again achieved a remarkable milestone. The Portuguese paddler reached the podium at this event for the 11th consecutive edition and for the 12th time overall, including the bronze medal he won in Zagreb in 2011. It is yet another outstanding achievement in a career defined by sustained excellence at the highest level.

➡️ The 2026 Paddle Europe Sprint, Paracanoe and Masters European Championships, held in Montemor-o-Velho, Portugal, from 11 to 14 June, were marked by a series of historic achievements, records, and the end of several long-standing competitive droughts.

🇵🇹 In the C1 5.000 m event, Portugal was represented for the first time by Ricardo Coelho, who became the first Portuguese athlete ever to compete in the long-distance race included in the European Championships programme. The paddler from Ponte de Lima finished in 9th place with a time of 25:23.407, securing a commendable top-10 finish despite being a marathon specialist.

🇵🇹 In another Olympic event, Júlio Lopes and Diogo Evangelista reached the Men's C2 500m semifinals. Portugal is still pursuing its first-ever final in this discipline.

🇵🇹 Although the Portuguese crew did not equal the country's best performance in the event - the 6th place in the semifinal achieved by Bruno Afonso and Marco Apura at the 2022 European Championships and the 2023 European Games in Kraków - their performance deserves recognition as another strong showing for Portuguese canoe sprint.

🇵🇹 In the Olympic Men's C1 1000m event, where Portugal had never previously reached a semifinal at a European Championships, Tiago Maciel delivered the country's best-ever performance. His 6th place in the semifinal surpassed Portugal's previous best result, set by José Lima de Sousa in 2013.

🇵🇹 Maciel also established a new Portuguese best time in the event, clocking 3:58.350. He improved on the previous national best marks of 4:53.405, recorded in Montemor-o-Velho in 2013, and 4:18.085, achieved by Nuno Barros in the second heat at Trasona on 30 June 2007.

🇩🇪 In the women's kayak events, Pauline Jagsch restored Germany's dominance in the K1 500 metres, securing the country's first European title in the discipline since 2012. Even more remarkably, she achieved victory with the fastest time ever recorded by a European athlete, clocking 1:47.164 and surpassing the previous European best of 1:47.264, set in 2017 by Hungary's Tamara Takács.

🇮🇹 In women’s canoe, Italy celebrated a historic breakthrough thanks to Olympia Della Giustina, who won the country's first-ever medals in the discipline. The young athlete claimed two European silver medals, finishing behind only Ukraine’s Liudmyla Luzan.

🇺🇦 Liudmyla Luzan also made history by setting two European records: 43.710 in the C1 200 metres (surpassing the 45.178 mark set in 2025) and 2:00.822 in the C1 500 metres (improving on the previous record of 2:02.749 established in 2024). She also won a remarkable four gold medals at this edition of the Championships, a feat rarely achieved in the history of the European Canoe Sprint Championships.
