The Faculty of Geology and Geophysics of the University of Bucharest, together with the SEG (Society of Economic Geologists) Bucharest Student Chapter, had the honor of hosting Prof. Adam C. Simon for a seminar on copper resources, economic growth, and mineral exploration.

The seminar addressed three main topics:
i) the critical role of copper in global economic development and the energy transition;
ii) the significance of porphyry copper deposits as the primary global source of copper, and
iii) innovative hydrogeochemical exploration techniques developed by VectOres, which analyze the metal isotopic composition of surface and groundwater to detect hidden copper sulfide mineralization beneath cover.

Within the framework of the EU Critical Raw Materials Act, Romania is distinguished by hosting three of the 47 strategic mining projects, including a copper-related project, highlighting its substantial mineral potential. In this context, the Faculty of Geology and Geophysics promotes science- and industry-oriented seminars, workshops, and field excursions aimed at supporting the professional development of future geologists, while also contributing to the broader industrial and economic advancement of Romania’s mining sector.

We would like to sincerely thank prof. Adam Simon for his outstanding presentation, ongoing support for students worldwide, and interest into Romania’s mineral resources potential.

Dear colleagues,
We are pleased to invite you to the fourth conference of the 2026 spring season of the GeoTalks series. Thursday, the 21st of May, Prof. Adam C. Simon, the Arthur F. Thurnau Professor of Earth & Environmental Sciences at the University of Michigan, USA, will present his talk entitled:

“Global copper demand outstrips supply, threatening electrification and industrial growth”

Brief biography of the lecturer:

Adam C. Simon is Professor of Mineral Resources at the University of Michigan and co-founder of VectOres Science, Inc., a consulting company that applies patented technologies to mineral exploration and processing. His research centers on mineral exploration and ore deposit genesis, with a particular emphasis on integrating geological and geochemical data to better understand ore-forming processes. He also uses metal isotopes to monitor mineralogical changes in heap leaching operations and to trace the sources of metals in the environment.

Over the course of his career, Professor Simon has worked on a wide variety of mineral deposit types, including porphyry, epithermal, Carlin-type, iron oxide–copper–gold (IOCG), iron oxide–apatite, layered mafic intrusions, and magmatic sulfide systems. He has led research programs on all seven continents, reflecting the global scope of his expertise.

He is co-author of the books Mineral Resources, Economics and the Environment, and Earth Materials: Components of a Diverse Planet. In addition, he has published more than 125 scientific papers and has received recognition for his innovative and transformative approaches to education. In 2024, he served as the Society of Economic Geologists Distinguished Lecturer at the global level, and he regularly delivers presentations to both general and specialist audiences on a broad range of topics related to energy and mineral resources.

You are warmly invited to attend the conference on Thursday, 21st of May, 2026, at 5:00 PM, in Lecture Hall 2A (2nd floor), Faculty of Geology and Geophysics, University of Bucharest.

We are looking forward to seeing you there!

We are pleased to invite you to the next conference of the 2026 spring season of the GeoTalks series. On Wednesday next week, Prof. Dr. Leonid Shumlyanskyy from the Institute of Geological Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Krakow, Poland, will present his talk entitled:
Revealing the secrets of the early evolution of Earth

Brief biography of the lecturer:
Leonid Shumlyanskyy graduated from Kyiv University in 1993, defended his PhD in 2002, and earned his Dr Sci. in 2012. Between 2002 and 2012, he held several postdoctoral positions at Liege University, Belgium; the Museum of Natural History, Stockholm, Sweden; and Bristol University, UK. From 2019 to 2022, he held a research fellow position at Curtin University, Australia. Since 2022, he has been employed by the Institute of Geological Sciences.
