Acting faculty tells the story of Pierre Bezukhov

Class of Boris Morozov presented their fourth year show “War and Peace: Pierre’s Youth”, based on Leo Tolstoy’s epic novel.

The performance follows Pierre from being a young man with no money or prospects through sudden wealth, love, marriage, betrayal and a duel to a profound spiritual awakening, and his attempt to save Natasha Rostova.

Directed and adapted by Sergei Poselskiy, dean of the Directing faculty. The role of Pierre was rehearsed in two casts, a rare opportunity even for a professional theatre.

As part of the third InteRussia international fellowship at GITIS, young actors are taking part in stage speech classes.

The training focuses on freeing the body and voice, developing breathing and articulation, and strengthening the physical foundations of vocal expression, with exercises and individual guidance from Vera Kamyshnikova, head of the GITIS department of Stage speech.

🏆 GITIS wins awards at the XX International University Theatre Festival in Tunisia!

The Acting faculty, class of Valery Sarkisov, took part in its first international tour in Monastir, presenting “Dear Women”, based on Alexander Ostrovsky’s comedy. Directed by the faculty member Marina Orel, the production received the Grand Prix, while GITIS student Gleb Nurmukhambetov won the award for Best Actor.

Our students performed “Dear Women”, based on Alexander Ostrovsky’s comedy “Rich Brides”, at the International University Theatre Festival in Tunisia.

The performance was followed by a discussion with festival participants in four languages: Russian, Arabic, French and English, bringing together young theatre-makers from different countries and cultures.

GITIS in Tunisia!

Students of Acting faculty (class of Valery Sarkisov) Acting are taking part in the 20th International University Theatre Festival in Monastir, Tunisia. It is their first international tour and first performance for a non-Russian-speaking audience.

Between rehearsals and performances, our students are meeting theatre-makers from around the world — sharing dances, conversations, coffee and tea.

🇧🇷🎭 Thank you, Brazil! See you soon, dear colleagues!

The GITIS International School at Teatro Escola Macunaíma in São Paulo has come to an end.

For 12 days, GITIS Associate Professor Irina Avtushenko worked with drama teachers from Brazil’s largest theatre school, exploring stage speech, voice, and the Stanislavsky System. More than a training course, it became a true professional dialogue between colleagues. Many Macunaíma teachers confidently work with the core principles of the Stanislavsky System and continue developing them in their own teaching.

🇧🇷 GITIS is back in Brazil!

The GITIS International School for drama teachers is now underway at Teatro Escola Macunaíma in São Paulo. Associate Professor Irina Avtushenko is leading an intensive program in stage speech, voice training, text analysis, and teaching methodology for the School's faculty members.

Working with Chekhov and Griboyedov, exploring voice, breath, and imagination, and discovering unexpected connections between Russian theatre training and Brazilian capoeira, participants are expanding their tools in actor training and theatre pedagogy. We are proud to contribute to the ongoing dialogue between the Stanislavsky tradition and Brazilian theatre.

At the GITIS School at Teatro Escola Macunaíma, Brazilian drama teachers discovered surprising connections between Russian stage speech training and the principles of capoeira: where rhythm, energy, and breath create a dialogue without physical contact.

Street theatre in Vladikavkaz! 🚋👽

Students of the GITIS MA in Street Theatre - the first programme of its kind at GITIS, presented an improvised performance about a group of curious aliens aboard a historic tram during the “Vakhtangov. The Way Home Festival”.

The performance combined masks, audience interaction and street theatre techniques. Our students joined an extensive educational and creative programme of the festival and took part in a carnival procession led by a giant Princess Turandot puppet - a character from Vakhtangov’s last theatre masterpiece.

Lake Issyk-Kul. Mountains. Aitmatov. 🌊⛰️🎭

The 5th GITIS Summer School concluded with a multilingual sketch performance of “The White Ship”, based on the celebrated novella by Kyrgyz writer Chingiz Aitmatov.

Rehearsed in Russian, Kyrgyz, Kazakh and Tajik, this work brought together GITIS teachers and students, and young artists from across Central Asia.

Where better to stage “The White Ship” than against the inspiring backdrop of the place that gave birth to it?
