MEPhI was founded in 1942 as the Moscow Mechanical Institute of Munitions. Its original mission was to train skilled personnel for the Soviet military and atomic programs. e until 2009. Today, MEPhI has five main departments (faculties):

Experimental and theoretical physics
Physics and Technology
Cybernetics and Information security
Automatics and electronics
High Technology Management and Economics

The university offers bachelor, masters (and similar degree ‘Specialist’), and post-graduate degrees in physics, mathematics, computer science and other areas. The curriculum of the first two years consists exclusively of required courses, with emphasis on mathematics, physics, experimental work and English. After the two first years of studying students on a competition basis enroll to the sub-departments which specialize in different branches of physics, computer science, information security, mathematics, etc. Starting with the fourth year, some students have a choice to make their diploma thesis, working at base science institutes. Most of them are research institutes, usually belonging to the Russian Academy of Sciences.

On March 12, the International Youth Nuclear Congress (IYNC) 2020 concluded in Sydney (Australia).
During the congress which began on March 9 ROSATOM representatives made over 30 presentations. Two workshops, one by Elena Pashina of Rosatom Overseas and Sergey Malozemov of Akkuyu Nukleer, were praised by the organizers among the best.
The IYNC 2020 concluded with the voting for the right to host the next congress in 2022. Russia along with Kenya, Ukraine and France submitted their applications. The Russian bid was prepared and presented by the ROSATOM enterprises representatives Maria Zotova (OKBM Afrikantov), Valeriya Khorishko (RAIN) and Gennady Karpinsky (Rosatom Overseas). Rusatom International Network and Rosatom Corporate Academy helped preparing the application.

Dedication to students is a tradition of the Institute of Laser and Plasma Technologies
A traditional event was recently held at Moscow National Research Nuclear University MEPhI. But before undergoing the initiation ceremony, freshmen teams were invited to participate in the quest, each station of which was thematically connected with the studied disciplines: physics, mathematics and computer science. During the quest, the guys randomly distributed among the teams had an excellent opportunity not only to measure their knowledge, outlook and dexterity, but also to make new acquaintances, performing various team-building tasks.

Professors of held the finals of the Rosatom Precise Energy Olympiad in , and in the city of Chennai (India). 327 students from Tamil Nadu universities and colleges participated in the final stage of the competition. They were selected from 2500 participants according to the results of the first round. The main prize for the students who showed the best results was a trip to Russia under the educational program organized by the State Atomic Energy Corporation .

NRNU MEPhI first entered the top 400 of the overall ranking of the best universities in the world U.S. News Best Global Universities 2020 (388 in the world and second in Russia). Compared with last year, NRNU MEPhI immediately advanced to 31 positions. This year, the top 1500 universities in the world were included in the overall ranking.

In the subject ranking in Physics, NRNU MEPhI took the 51st place in the world (second place among all Russian universities). In this rating, NRNU MEPhI improved its position by 25 places.

In addition, NRNU MEPhI first entered the subject ratings of U.S. News Best Global Universities in Chemistry and Engineering.

On February 15, in MEPHI a solemn physical launch of the first international snow nuclear power plant with ice-water reactor (MS AES-1) took place in the Moscow Engineering Physics Institute (Obninsk). During the ceremony, a “chain reaction” of handshakes was launched, in which more than 150 students of the Institute of Nuclear Power Engineering, National Research Nuclear University MEPHI, construction crews, and the first rector of the Institute of Electrical Power Engineering, Yu.A. Kazan, representatives of NPP "Dose". Vice Rector MEPHI T.N. Leonova closed the "chain reaction" by pressing the start button of the world's first ice-water reactor.

The AMS group has published data on cosmic positron spectrum measurements collected in 2011–2017 and covering the range from one to one thousand GeV. A preliminary analysis showed that the observed flux is well approximated by the sum of the low-energy component caused by the scattering of ordinary matter particles on particles of interstellar gas, and the high-energy component associated with dark matter or an astrophysical source. At the same time, the characteristic energy that cuts off the high-energy component is in the range of 630–1120 GVE.
