In 1915, in Orenburg, the centre of the Orenburg province, was opened teacher's Institute for the training of qualified teachers. In 1919, the pedagogical Institute was reorganized into the Institute of national education. The University has
repeatedly changed its official name. Orenburg state pedagogical University is the successor of Orenburg Institute of national education (organized by the resolution of the RSFSR people's Commissariat from 30.07.1919, it was functioning in Orenburg from 1919 till 1930) and Orenburg state pedagogical Institute was opened in 1930 by the decree of the Commission of Council of people's Commissars of the RSFSR from 08.07.1930). By the order of the Ministry of General and professional education of the Russian Federation from 03.24.1997, № 516 the Orenburg state pedagogical Institute was renamed in the Orenburg state pedagogical University. By the order of the Ministry of education and science from the 19.04.2011, № 1501 it renamed in the Federal state educational institution of higher professional education «the Orenburg state pedagogical University”. In different years a lot of famous scientists worked at the University: academicians V. Lazarenko, D. Svirenko, V. Zhuravlev and others. Orenburg state pedagogical University today
The Orenburg state pedagogical University now consists of eight educational buildings, a sport center, a training and athletic building with a 200-meter track and field athletics track, three dormitories, with reading and fitness rooms, a dining room with canteens in all educational buildings, the library, which has over 724 thousand volumes of educational, scientific and reference literature more than a hundred different laboratories equipped with the necessary devices and computer equipment, training and experimental area. Lessons are held in three educational institutes, eight departments. Institute of qualification improvement and professional retraining of workers of education, in which every year more than 8,5 thousand of heads of educational institutions and teachers of the region improve their skills; faculty of pre-University training; postgraduate studies in 20 specialties; PhD by 1 degree; 44 Department, which employs 433 teachers, - work at the University. 81% of the teachers have scientific degrees and titles, 16.5% of them are doctors of science and professors. There are three Council of defence of doctoral and candidate dissertations, published more than 300 units of scientific, educational and methodical literature. The textbooks and the manuals written by the University`s teachers are often used in the practice of the teachers not only in Orenburg region, but in the Russian Federation. Currently, the University is a center of regional pedagogical education, which created the system of continuing education of teachers for pre-school, primary, secondary, vocational and higher professional education. Orenburg State Pedagogical University is the basic University in the region in all areas of teacher education, ensuring the process of education development of the necessary scientific-methodological and technological support for 8 consolidated groups of directions and specialities, on 17 directions of preparation of bachelors, in 3 directions of preparation of masters, in 32 specialties of higher professional education. The University provides training on all areas of the enlarged group «Education and teaching». Historians-archivists, sports coaches, specialists in adaptive physical culture, employees of correctional educational institutions who work with children with disabilities may receive higher education in their field only in the Orenburg State Pedagogical University. In the University there is a successful postgraduate and doctoral studentship in 20 specialties, three dissertation councils on defense of doctor's and candidate's theses, and fundamental and applied research are held in eight fields of science and nineteen problematic areas. Orenburg State Pedagogical University considerably exceeds the standard values for all accreditation indicators.
