Department of applied politics (NRU HSE — St.Petersburg) invites you to its fifth annual conference «The October readings». In 2016 the conference will focus on development of Russia in the global political context. There has recently been a steadfast accumulation of internal contradictions visible in the processes of political and social development in Russia. While acknowledging that Russia is i

nherently part of the modern world and having repeatedly resorted to the models and practices of governance commonly accepted in the developed countries, Russian authorities still think of Russia as a space for trying out alternative models of political and social development. Such positioning used to be a mere rhetorical device, but it now becomes more and more of a real course of action for the ruling elite, which has significantly changed political and social reality not only in Russia, but in the broader post-Soviet space. The fifth October readings «Development of Russia in the framework of global politics» will focus on a comprehensive analysis of the processes of social and political development in Russia to be conducted in a classical comparative perspective. The conference will aim to understand how political and social practices in modern Russia can be related to the similar processes in the developed and developing countries.

We are glad to invite you to take part in "The October Readings" conference!
This year it will be held October 20-22 in Higher School of Economics.
The fifth October readings «Development of Russia in the framework of global politics» will focus on a comprehensive analysis of the processes of social and political development in Russia to be conducted in a classical comparative perspective. The conference will aim to understand how political and social practices in modern Russia can be related to the similar processes in the developed and developing countries.
The major areas of discussion shall be:
1. Changing the principles of global politics in the world and in the post-Soviet space.
2. Comparative analysis of the social and economic reforms and of the models of governance in modern states.
3. Dynamics of the social change.
4. Functioning of the political institutions in the hybrid regimes.
The fifth October readings will take place on October 20-22, 2016 in St.Petersburg.
