We’re pleased to share “Navigating Forced Displacement: Socioeconomic Challenges and Adaptation Strategies among the Sudanese in the United Arab Emirates – Ajman” A paper by Hager Hassan, with the support of CEDEJ Khartoum.

Drawing on interviews, focus groups, and field observations, the study examines the everyday realities faced by Sudanese displaced to the UAE following the 2023 war in Sudan. From legal restrictions and rising living costs to employment barriers and housing challenges, the paper explores how migrants navigate uncertainty while rebuilding their lives in Ajman.

The study also highlights the importance of social networks, Sudanese cultural spaces, bazaars, and digital platforms in fostering resilience, solidarity, and adaptation within the community.

CEDEJ Khartoum extends its sincere condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the late Sudanese researcher and activist Muzan Alneel.

Muzan was a committed and principled scholar whose work reflected deep engagement with Sudan’s realities. A 2025 CEDEJ Khartoum grantee, her contributions to research and public scholarship were grounded in a strong belief in the agency of Sudanese people and the possibility of meaningful change in Sudan.

Her loss is deeply felt, and her legacy will continue on through the ideas she leaves behind.

Our heartfelt condolences to all who knew and worked with her.

📣 New on the CEDEJ Khartoum Blog!

We’re pleased to share a new paper entitled “The Inequality–Growth Nexus in Sudan: Insights from an ARDL Approach” by Mohamed Elhaj Mustafa (University of Khartoum), produced with the support of CEDEJ Khartoum.

Using economic data from 1980–2022, the study examines the relationship between income inequality and economic growth in Sudan. The findings suggest that while inequality may coincide with short-term growth, it ultimately acts as a barrier to long-term development in fragile economic contexts.

At a time of deep economic and humanitarian challenges, the paper highlights the importance of inclusive growth policies to support Sudan’s recovery and long-term stability.
