MA-MA – an HDK-Valand Campus Steneby Master Exhibition

Opening May 28
Steneby Art Hall
May 28 May - June 7th

MA-MA carries layered meanings: an abbreviation (‘Master–Master’), a name for mother across cultures, and a primal sound in the formation of language.
MA-MA is the exhibition of first- and second-year master students from the Applied Arts and Design programme at HDK-Valand, Campus Steneby. The works represent a diverse group of material-based makers and designers within the Metal Art and Wood Oriented Furniture Design specializations.
The exhibition brings together these makers at distinct stages in developing their individual languages through practice. Each is engaged in the process of giving form to thoughts, ideas, and experiences through explorations of materials, techniques, methods, and contexts.
Through this exhibition, we invite you to take part in a collective moment held between the first and second years of the programme when the work enters into being and is to be experienced. Individually, the works reveal a range of voices: makers defining their own languages, shaping form as a way of understanding and being in the world.

Welcome Today to our BA1 exhibition: The Archetype ✨by students from and

At the core of every culture, myth, and personal journey lives a set of recurring figures: the archetypes.

They are, for example, the visionary, the caregiver, the rebel, the innocent, the creator. First explored through mythology and later developed in psychology,
archetypes are universal patterns of identity and behavior that shape the way we understand ourselves and others.

They exist beyond language and time, appearing in dreams, stories, rituals, and everyday life.

This exhibition brings those invisible patterns into physical form through a collection of multimedia works.

Each piece is correlated to a different archetypal presence. Rather than presenting fixed definitions, the works invite viewers into a process of recognition and reflection.

You may encounter fragments of yourself within them: familiar fears, desires, instincts, and transformations.
Together, these works create a bridge between the ancient and the modern. The exhibition asks not only what archetypes are, but how they continue to live within us - influencing the stories we tell, the identities we perform, and the worlds we imagine.

Exam Class 2026 -

”This is R’lyeh.
Named after an ancient city from the Lovecraftian novel “Call of Cthulhu” this sword represents creative forces as something hardly graspable by a sane mind. The otherworldly organic chaos is being framed by gentle copper lines to symbolise the way we interpret these forces and try to contain them within physical objects we make.
To be able to reach these forces an artist must venture far out into the hostile lands and become a channel for them so they can manifest after a successful return home. With this sword I went so far out of the comfort of my home that I was not sure if I will ever manage to come back and I was lost throughout most of the making process.
R’lyeh is a ritual sword not intended for combat. The making process was a ritual through which I tried to harmonically unite the historical sword making tradition with contemporary innovation and contribute to the slowly growing field of contemporary artistic sword making because that’s where I see the future of swords. Even though they were stripped of their original application, swords are still imbued with potent symbolical meanings and can gain even more relevance for the contemporary world through art”

Project: Conveyor
”I work with memories of growing up around the limestone industry. The shapes of conveyors, structures, and industrial skylines have stayed with me and now reappear in my sculptures.
These sculptures are not only about industry, but about connection. They create a meeting point between different perspectives between those who recognize the industrial language and those who encounter it as form. In this space, the work becomes a starting point for dialogue”

21 students, 21 perspectives. From wood to metal, from sketch to object, this exhibition celebrates the many ways materials and ideas take shape.
This annual exhibition showcases the degree projects of 21 students graduating from Metal Art and Wood Oriented Furniture Design at the University of Gothenburg’s Campus Steneby.
Here, you are invited to perceive and take part of 21 angles of craft and design. Through material and conceptual investigations, the students explore human practices and behaviours using a variety of methods and techniques.
The exhibition presents a thematic diversity. At the same time, the projects also intertwine in common topics. Some engage with a democratic approach to design, where a sense of community and bringing people together become central. Others may address different aspects of resilience, as well as symbolism and tradition in a contemporary context. These tendencies can also be recognised
beyond the exhibition space.

Presenting Metal Art Campus Steneby Exam class 2026 University of Gothenburg -

Forms Over Body is a series of body-related objects that explores the relationship
between industrial forging and the human body. It draws inspiration from the visual
language of forging. Using this technique, the material develops soft, fleshy details at
the ends of the bar. These elements are used to create a connection between forged
steel and the body.
As the forms are stretched and shaped over the human body, they carry the imprint of
the wearer, creating an intersection between adornment and physical presence.
Objects invite reflection on how these wearable forms dwell on the body, respond to it,
and alter the way bodily presence is experienced.

TEXT 4 EVER,
I investigate how you can use metal to create sculptures depicting text and what meaning the materials you use have in that context. I want to find ways to trick myself into believing that words can have greater meaning when combined with craft, compared to the same words written on paper. I also want to inspire others to believe the same thing. My project explores the combination of naivety, seriousness, text and craft.

'Exploded Views‘
Coming from a background as a car mechanic, I was used to systems of logic, structure, and clear cause-and-effect relationships. Entering art meant encountering something fundamentally different.
Within the academy, I found myself struggling with how to combine structure and analysis with intuition and artistic openness. This tension became the foundation of my work Exploded Views. The project approaches sculpture as a process of inquiry and reflects my attempts to merge past and present, the static and the moving.
The title is a reference to a type of mechanical drawing that separates the components of an object, allowing us to imagine how they function and come together as a whole.
Working with scrap machine parts and car body panels, material that has been in my natural environment and always inspired me, the sculptures developed through a method of constant interplay between intuition and analysis, randomness and structure, chaos and order.

Craft Days is here, and we want to give an extra shoutout to one of our own program highlights. Craft Tour Västra Götaland was a popular feature already in 2024, and new for this year is that you can choose between TWO different destinations: The Textile Museum in Borås or Dals Långed & Fengersfors. Both locations offer a packed and inspiring program.

At the Textile Museum, the seminar day Craft Says will feature lectures, artist talks, presentations, and guests including Bea Szenfeld and curator/editor-in-chief Elizabeth Kozlowski from the American Surface Magazine.

If you choose the Craft Tour bus to Dalsland, you’re in for a full-day excursion. The first stop is Dals Långed, where you can experience a group exhibition at the Studio Växt collective and visit HDK-Valand Campus Steneby with three student exhibitions. The second stop is Fengersfors, home to the collective Not Quite, presenting both a group exhibition and workshops. You’ll also find the Homographic Museum there — the world’s smallest museum with the largest permanent collection of q***r art.
