Former EU Commissioner Cecilia Malmström now begun her role as Visiting Professor at the School.

Yesterday, she participated in a seminar for partners and alumni, where she spoke on the topic of 'The State of Trade Policy and Transatlantic Relations'.

"Trade policy has been rather turbulent, to say the least. Looking ahead, I believe relations will remain strained for some time, and there is a risk of entering a kind of perpetual negotiation with unclear rules of engagement," she said.

The Assar Gabrielsson Professorship is a 20 per cent appointment running from 1 September 2025 to 31 August 2026. Cecilia Malmström previously held the professorship from 2020 to 2021.

"Last time I was the Assar Gabrielsson Professor, most of the period was marked by the pandemic and Zoom lectures. I’m now looking forward to meeting students and colleagues "in real life" and having many exciting discussions about current geopolitics."

From farm manager in Kenya to financial analyst at Volvo Cars. Dennis Mutiso Muli studied for a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering in Nairobi. Working as an entrepreneur sparked his interest in finance, and he moved with his family to Gotheburg to study for a Master’s degree in Finance. Now he is pursuing a career at Volvo Cars through the Volvo Cars Graduate Programme.

”My background as an engineer has been very helpful because finance involves a lot of maths. Maths is my comfort zone and what I like most about my job."

"I used the school's Career Service a lot. They were great! My CV was originally five pages long and they helped me with how to better communicate my knowledge and skills. Every international student should use their services. They gave me information on how to prepare for interviews and what it is like to work in Sweden. I found out about the Volvo Cars Graduate Programme through Linkedin and a graduate career portal recommended by Career Service.”

Dennis Mutiso Muli was looking for a master’s degree in finance and found it in Gothenburg. At the moment, however, he is in New Jersey, USA, for a few months. Since graduating in 2023, he has been part of the Volvo Cars Graduate Programme, a two-year programme aimed at developing future leaders within the company.

"I get to go to different departments within the company and learn about them. This is my fifth placement and I am working with learning and development for retailers in the US," he says.

Previous placements have included working with Volvo's leasing service, Care by Volvo, where he analysed the impact of interest rates on the business.
"I look at how we can produce better and see myself primarily as a data analyst. My background as an engineer has been very helpful because finance involves a lot of maths. Maths is my comfort zone and what I like most about my job."

The 2021 Suez Canal blockage resulted in a loss of nearly $89 million for the shipping company Maersk Line. This is revealed in a new study conducted by a European research team in collaboration with the School of Business, Economics and Law at the University of Gothenburg. The methodology can also be used to analyse the ongoing crisis in the Red Sea.

"The blockage highlights the vulnerability of our global supply chains and the huge costs that can result from a disruption. Our findings underline the need for robust contingency plans and alternative transport routes to minimise future risks," says Prof. Kevin Cullinane (The School of Business, Economics and Law at the University of Gothenburg).

Marvin Meincke's decision to pursue a Master's in Economics was driven by a desire to delve deeper into economic analysis. “During the undergraduate studies one merely scrapes on the surfaces of economic analysis, hence I wanted to learn more,” he explains. The versatility of the economic toolkit, applicable in various fields, further solidified his choice.

Marvin’s current internship as a research assistant at the Department of Economics is a standout aspect of his academic journey. “Within our curriculum, we have the chance to take an internship over the duration of 10 weeks that consists of 15 credits,” he explains. After a competitive application process and an interview, Marvin secured one of the five available positions.

Working under the supervision of Professor Ola Olsson, Marvin and his colleague are involved in three different research projects. “It is a great time and it gives us the opportunity to learn how research is done and how academia functions,” he says. This hands-on experience is complemented by lunch lectures where researchers present their work, offering insights into the path of a PhD student and current research trends.

Marvin Meincke, a dedicated MSc Economics student, is currently enhancing his academic journey with a hands-on internship at the Department of Economics. His experience highlights the opportunities provided by the programme, blending theoretical education with practical research skills.

After three years of implementation, a laser-assisted land leveling project in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam has yielded significant economic and environmental benefits. Initiated and funded by EfD, the project has transformed rice farming in two Vietnamese provinces. After the study was finished, more farmers and farm cooperatives are adopting this method.

The project, "Heterogeneous valuation and eco-efficiency of Laser Land Leveling in paddy production in the Mekong Delta," studied farmers' adoption of this innovative technology and its impact on productivity. EfD researchers introduced cutting-edge precision agriculture techniques to help farmers adapt to climate change. The method reduces water, seed, fertilizer, and pesticide use while increasing yields by flattening fields with laser-guided technology.

2024 Nobel Laureate Simon Johnson held a presentation at the School on "𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐆𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐈𝐧𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐀𝐠𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐈"

Simon Johnson received this year’s Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel, together with his research colleagues Daron Acemoglu and James A. Robinson. They were awarded the prize for their insights into the wealth of nations, identifying a key explanation of the differences in countries' institutions, such as democracy and property rights -differences that can be traced back to the colonial era. Their economic research has a distinctly historical perspective.
