Contributor Reveal: Christianne Aikins Returns!

We are very glad to soon welcome back Christianne Aikins to lead the course “Beyond Narratives: War and Conflict”

❓What to expect: This week will explore the lenses that we often use to understand war and conflict, and how we can stretch beyond this; what does it look like to approach war and conflict with a lens of justice and historical understanding? How can we notice the ways that certain frameworks and language embedded in our daily lives upholds injustice? For example, looking at systems such as capitalism, colonialism, imperialism and orientalism, within ourselves and the world. This week will use such critical thinking frameworks to explore important and relevant case studies.

📣 Christianne is an educator, facilitator, and ‘development practitioner’ based in Beirut, leveraging participatory approaches to support security sector reform with police and military, primarily in Lebanon and Jordan, and engages with civil society in support of peacebuilding and social cohesion programming. Previously, Christianne focused on environmental justice, working across Asia and the Americas with government, nonprofits, and grassroots organizations to enhance food security, build climate resilience, and promote sustainable development using a complex systems approach.

Contributor Reveal: Elias Diaz Returns!

We are excited to welcome back Elias Diaz to lead the course: Being Human in a Technological Age!

Based in the Philippines, Elias is a facilitator dedicated to surfacing contradictions in our digital evolution. He explores how cultural impulses can empower civil society to counterbalance market imperatives through "civic technologies." Currently, he is actively working with an environmental coalition in the Philippines to stop destructive infrastructure projects linked to recent national corruption scandals. ✊

🤖 What to expect: Humanity has been thrown into the deep end of the virtual world. How do we navigate this without fear or blind immersion? In this course, many questions will be explored: What is consciousness, and can AI achieve it? Should AI have rights? What about human sovereignty? Can wisdom traditions guide technological development? Do the environmental costs of AI justify climate solutions? And many more!

If you are interested in exploring these questions with YIP19, welcome! This is an OPEN COURSE that will take place in Xi’An, China.

INTRODUCING ROSIE

Rosie Froome is a recent graduate of YIP18, who will be volunteering her time during the autumn term of YIP19! We look forward to having her cheerful, welcoming and kind presence on the Organising Team.

Here are some words from Rosie…
“I grew up in this funny patch of land that we call ‘England’, in Kent. Here I experienced life and all its fluctuations, went through mainstream education and found an interest in critical studies - gravitating towards sociology and politics. I later studied these at University in London, whose harsh and vibrant environment broadened my questions and inspirations. Much of my time was spent organising and participating in activism as i felt my longing for ‘another world’ growing, or rather recognising the need for us to live differently.

I am a curious and reflexive person, with a joy for social connection and a drive to always find currents of creativity, care and hope. I hope, going forwards to find alternative ways of living, finding autonomy from larger system and pursuing justice for all peoples. YIP has been an important experience for me of alternative living , learning and community. Allowing me to sit with all the systems i have internalised from my experiences of education, and capitalist individualised society, I have met myself and the world in a new way. I feel I have much more to learn from the team, programme and in myself, I am so excited to be a part of the next YIP year and to be inspired by the next gen of Yippies!”

Contributor Reveal: Welcome back Roi Gal-Or!

We are honored to welcome back Roi Gal-Or, co-founder of the International School of Storytelling to YIP19!

With over 20 years of experience teaching storytelling for peace, healing, and reconciliation worldwide, Roi weaves together traditional tales, social games, and biographical work to inspire social transformation.

What to expect: What makes a story work? Can words shift the world? What is the relationship between wisdom traditions and stories from the past and your life today? During this course participants will learn and be inspired to tell and work with traditional, personal and spontaneous stories. The course will introduce participants to the transformative path of the storyteller, a path of development and transformation guided by humanity’s great shifters and shapers – Stories. The week will culminate in a Storytelling Feast where participants will tell a story they worked on throughout the week.

INTRODUCING RUBY

Ruby Botica is a recent graduate of YIP18, who will be volunteering her time during the autumn term of YIP19! We look forward to having her caring, attentive, creative presence on the Organising Team.

Here are some words from Ruby...

"I was born in and grew up in New Zealand, close to nature always, which inspired my creativity in writing and music. I attended to a Waldorf school which further encouraged my creativity and freedom. Later I attended a mainstream high-school, which lead me to seeking alternative holistic tertiary education options. I have worked in a market garden and support work. I found YIP and it has been an opportunity for me to connect to holistic creative learning again and understand the world a little more beyond my home. I am so excited to be volunteering for YIP19, and contribute to this space."

Contributor Reveal: Brenno Kaschner Russo returns to kickstart the Personal Initiative!

We are excited to welcome back YIP alumni and contributor Brenno Kaschner Russo for his course on ‘Personal Initiative’.

Based in Portugal, Brenno works with the "technology of connection" to unleash collective potential. With experience in over 17 countries—from Belgium to India, Russia to China—he specializes in activating collaboration and shifting culture through deep dialogue.

He will be kickstarting the Personal Initiative, which is one of the key pillars within the YIP curriculum. The Personal Initiative is an opportunity for each participant to choose a theme or personal interest to explore throughout the 10 months, culminating in a presentation at the end of the year.

The course with Brenno will be a reflective and purpose-oriented week where participants explore their personal motivation and vision. Through dialogue, solo time in nature, and decision-making tools, learners will clarify the “Why” behind their Personal Initiative.

🌍 Wondering about the philosophy behind YIP?

In 2008, YIP was launched as a response to the call of young people for an educational approach that allowed them to meet the challenges of today’s world - not just intellectually, but practically, socially, and emotionally while taking into account the value of community and individual autonomy.

Beneath our operations lie three core qualities that form our ethos:

🌱 One Interconnected Living OrganismWe understand the world as deeply interconnected. Every action has an impact. This awareness fosters a global, multi-factorial consciousness that is essential for healthy living and sustainable change.

⚖️ Freedom & ResponsibilityAt YIP, participants explore the relationships between personal freedom and social responsibility. How do I have to be for you to be free?

🧠❤️🤲 Head, Heart, and HandsWe engage the whole human being. This holistic approach activates intellectual, emotional, and practical capacities to support a balanced and integrated development.
