It’s finally time again for another , today we bring you our fourth with the help of Thijs Geerts. With a new generation of SMIO students getting ready to join LiU's SMIO program in August, we would like to introduce to you one of our previous students and his experience in the SMIO program.
Name: Thijs Geerts
Nationality: Dutch
SMIO program 2015-2017
After SMIO, he started as a Junior Manager in Supply Planning at Henkel in Düsseldorf, Germany. Thijs currently lives close to Eindhoven, The Netherlands and is working as an Electrical Engineer at Hoppenbrouwers Techniek B.V. After constructing houses in his free time, Thijs decided to start a technical career which combines working as a mechanic and studying Building Information Modelling (BIM) of electrotechnical installations. With a market of high demand for technical skills, Hoppenbrouwers Techniek provides great possibilities to apply management skills and learn how to be a mechanic on construction projects.
Thijs’s most important takeout from the SMIO program was building up theory at the beginning of the program and later during the study having practical projects. He also acknowledges the bond between the junior students and senior students, which is enhancing the program´s durability and helped students to find their place.
Recalling valuable memories from his time in Linköping, Thijs thoroughly enjoyed the first week in Linköping as well as the teambuilding event in the woods near Rimforsa. During the team building, he learned to read a compass, got to know students in the SMIO-class, cooked food together and prepared for the semester ahead with the sunset on the lake. With nostalgia, he thinks back to the traditional Swedish queuing tradition, mingling with other international students for a nice Fika break and filling up the coffee thermos at Kårallen.
He also remembers Per Åman as a knowledgeable lecturer, which made his lectures fun and, in general, interesting to study. Besides, Thijs addresses the importance of course seminars to present and get feedback from fellow students. Specifically, the poster seminar was a good point of reference in which direction his thesis needed to go.
Thijs his advice for all new SMIO students would be to enjoy the great campus facilities and extracurricular possibilities. He suggests designing an SMIO business card and networking with the great companies in Linkoping. For leisure, definitely take out the bike to discover the rural surroundings.
Thank you Thijs for sharing your , we look forward to seeing you again!
