Congratulations to Professor Kaveh Madani, Lund University alumnus and Director of the United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Health (UNU-INWEH), on being awarded the 2026 Stockholm Water Prize.

His pioneering research and commitment to addressing some of the world’s most pressing water challenges have made a significant contribution to a more sustainable and water-secure future.

💧 Lund University is in Stockholm to celebrate a remarkable alumnus
This year, Lund University alumnus Professor Kaveh Madani receives the 2026 Stockholm Water Prize, often described as the ”Nobel Prize of Water”.

Ahead of the award ceremony, representatives from Lund University joined researchers and global leaders at World Water Week’s Meet the Laureate session to discuss Professor Madani’s research, achievements and contributions to global water sustainability.

Among those attending was Dr Rolf Larsson, Director of the Lund University UNU Hub. The session was also attended by His Majesty King Carl XVI Gustaf.

Beyond this morning’s session, World Water Week features several Lund University alumni whose work is advancing research, policy and management across the globe:

🌟🎉 Strengthened position for Lund University in world's top 100 🎉🌟

Lund University ranks #71 in the QS World University Rankings 2027, making it the highest‑ranked university in Sweden. The university has steadily climbed over the years, up 24 positions in just four years, highlighting its strong development and global impact.

”This result confirms the high quality that characterises Lund University's research, education and international collaborations. Being ranked highest in Sweden while remaining strong internationally shows that together we are creating world class knowledge and innovation,” says Erik Renström, Vice-Chancellor of Lund University.

The QS World University Rankings are based on several indicators, such as Citations per Faculty, International Research Network, and Sustainability. The most heavily weighted indicators are Academic Reputation and Employer Reputation, which together account for 45 per cent of the total score. These are based on annual reputation surveys conducted by QS, targeting academics and employers worldwide who are asked to share their views on the world’s leading universities.
