Senior Lecturer in Architecture with a focus on computational design and digital fabrication

Subject description
The subject concerns computational approaches to architectural design and their interaction with material, spatial and fabrication practices. It encompasses design and research methods that connect programming, digital modelling and simulation with physical experimentation, material behaviour and computer-controlled fabrication. Computation is understood both as a design medium and as part of iterative processes in which digital and physical operations inform one another. Research may combine scientific inquiry with artistic, practice-based and experimental methods in which design, prototyping and making contribute to knowledge production.

Particular emphasis is placed on materially grounded approaches to architecture, including robotic and additive fabrication, material computation, bio-based materials, adaptive or interactive systems and digital craft. The field also examines how emerging technologies and changing modes of production reshape architectural design and practice. At Lund University, the subject is developed through the Master’s Programme in Digital Architecture and Emergent Futures (MAEF) and the bioDigital matter lab, supported by robotics and digital fabrication infrastructure within the Faculty of Engineering.

Work duties include:

Research within the subject area and active contribution to the bioDigital matter lab's research environment.
Teaching in the first, second and third cycles of studies, including course responsibility, supervision and examination of degree projects.
Development and leadership of research projects, including actively seeking external research funding independently and in collaboration with colleagues.
Active leadership role and contribution to the MAEF programme's long-term development and quality.
Collaboration with industry and wider society.
Administration related to the work duties listed above.

Miniature Furniture
Exhibition in Blackbox

Industrial Design students are exhibiting the assignment Miniatures during the period of 12 October to 20 October in the Black Box in the A-building.

Miniatures deals with sitting furniture in scale 1:5. The aim of the assignment is to apply an experimental approach to design method, furniture form and function, as well as furniture materials, and invent a novel piece of sitting furniture.

The small scale is chosen to allow students to try out many different solutions throughout the design process. By working with a miniature furniture, the students will also improve their abilities to deal with scale models. The experimental research process and the design process are both documented and reflected upon in a folder.

A huge congratulation to our SUDes student Josefine Angvald Westesson for her amazing first price at the Oyster competition with the theme barrier.

Breaking Boundaries to Invite: Courtyard Structures in Södra Sofielund, Malmö

Josefine's project explores how fragmented courtyard structures in Södra Sofielund can be transformed into a more connected and inclusive urban landscape. By opening up spatial boundaries, strengthening transitions between private and public spaces, and introducing shared green and climate-adapted areas, the proposal creates new opportunities for social interaction, shared use and more equitable access to everyday urban spaces.

The jury motivates their selection like this:
The winning proposal describes the conditions and transformation of the chosen site in a concrete and elegant way, clearly demonstrating how a new whole can become greater than the sum of its parts.

Light and darkness become the starting point for a series of explorations in material, form and space.

As part of the project, students have designed a garment and a piece of furniture, exploring how light, material and form can be experienced in relation to both the body and the space around it.

GROWTH challanges the conventional design process, starting the conversation at local available materials and their life circle. Through that building systems are shaped and building timelines formed.

Her project GROWTH won the first price in the individual category.

Climate pressures are intensifying, social and ecological resources are stretched, and urban infrastructures are being pushed beyond what they were ever designed to handle. Cities, the most complex human systems, must respond.

Urban Courage brings together designers, urban practitioners, researchers, and students to discuss where change is needed – and how design can help make it happen. What can courageous design make possible?

The conference marks 20 years of the Master’s Programme in Sustainable Urban Design (SUDes) at Lund University, at a time when Lund University has been ranked nr 1 in the world for sustainability. Together, these milestones offer an opportunity to reflect on two decades of work in sustainable urban design and to consider what comes next.

**Furniture as landscape in the urban landscape.**

What happens when discarded materials become the building blocks for new places to gather?

Second-year students at the School of Architecture collaborated with students from Kulturcentrum Skåne to transform reclaimed materials from the Lund Carnival into outdoor furniture and seating for Brunnshögstorg.

The project explores reuse not only as a question of material, but as a way of shaping public space, creating small landscapes for sitting, meeting and staying.

With the help of the teachers Martin Svansjö and Marit Lindberg and the city architect of Lund Christian Wilke, as well as David Eriksson and Peder Karlsson to support the building workshop .
