Further to this, there are a couple of related items.
Firstly, Martha has graciously accepted our invitation to talk to students (and any faculty who are interested) on 31 October, from 10.00-noon in the K3 Studio. She will focus on her work as a hip hop educator, and also on social entrepreneurship. Online attendance is also available at https://mau-se.zoom.us/j/7770208399
Here is the abstract for the class:
"Hip-Hop Futures: Social Entrepreneurship and the Path to Cultural Sustainability"
In this talk, Colombian-American futurist and award-winning social entrepreneur Martha Díaz (MD) will explore the transformative power of Hip-Hop social entrepreneurship and its role in advancing social justice and equity. Drawing from over 30 years of experience across the Hip-Hop entertainment industry, public arts, education, and academia, MD will share her journey of building bridges between cultural, educational, and government institutions to create lasting social impact.
As the founder of the Hip-Hop Education Center and a globally recognized thought leader, MD has developed innovative programs and initiatives that leverage Hip-Hop culture to empower marginalized communities. She will discuss how her work as a curator, archivist, and educator has contributed to preserving Hip-Hop’s cultural legacy while fostering new opportunities for social entrepreneurship within the movement.
Through a mix of real-world examples and personal insights, MD will highlight key strategies for using Hip-Hop to address issues such as inequality, community empowerment, and youth engagement. This talk will provide students with a fresh perspective on social entrepreneurship and how Hip-Hop culture can be used as a tool for positive change, while inspiring the next generation of changemakers to think creatively and act boldly.
