Du kan följa kursen oavsett var du befinner dig. Inga obligatoriska möten på plats. Kursen ges online vid Malmö universitet och fokuserar på två- eller flerspråkigas komplexa språksituation som innebär att utveckla och bevara flera språk och identiteter. Kursen tar även upp vad som händer med svenskan i kontakt med olika minoritetsspråk: bl.a. lån, kodväxling mellan svenska och de andra språken samt framväxten av nya former av förortssvenska. Antagna studenter får fri tillgång till kursmaterialet. Kursen avslutas med en hemtenta.

Abstract: After the Georgian nobleman Ioane Tornike supported the young Byzantine emperor Basil II against pretenders to the Byzantine throne, Georgians became much closer connected to Byzantine politics and to Byzantine text culture. The establishment of the Iviron monastery in mount Athos turned out a most productive translation center but also became an aristocratic setting of Georgians within the Byzantine world. Our extant text material witnesses both this Byzantine-Georgian literary exchanges and gives us valuable information on different text cultures along the Silk Road.

Call for papers: RUCARR online panels Nov 6 – LANGUAGE IN CONFLICT AND WAR. UKRAINE, CAUCASUS, RUSSIA.

— Language: English. Format: max. 500 words including title, but excluding references. Deadline for submission September 20.
— Participants are also welcome to propose sections of three thematically coherent papers. In case you would like to do so, indicate the theme of the section when you submit the abstract proposal and who is coordinating the section.
Thematic areas
Current violent developments in the post-Soviet region bring to the forefront a number of issues reflecting the importance of language, being intertwined with conflict and war. Ukraine, Georgia and other multiethnic and multilingual states with shared legacy of Russian domination, struggle with partly similar challenges of integration or confrontation. Ethnic minorities in the Russian federation – Tatars, Circassians, Chechens, Dagestanis, Kalmucks and others – have a history of centuries of Russian colonization, which has included deportations and forced migration.
Language is a salient marker of difference and could be used as a symbol of “the other”, “the enemy”. The politicization of the use of Ukrainian vs Russian in Ukraine is a vivid example. How have the status/use of Russian and Ukrainian and the identity and attitudes of speakers changed since the Russian invasion of Ukraine? Examples of other topics:
• Russian as the historically colonial language. Domination, inequality and language shift;
• The function and identity of Russian-speaking groups outside Russia (including “passportization”);
• Language situation of ethnic minorities in occupied/annexed zones;
• Language and forced migration;
• Language reveals who you are. Still in practice: test used to identify “the other”.
Note that the online zoom panels on November 6 will not be in hybrid mode at Malmö University campus.

Application is open to online Georgian I (Fall 2023)!

Welcome to apply to the online course GEORGIAN I by April 17 (Fall 2023). No tuition fee for EU students. Instruction in English. No mandatory meetings at Malmö University campus. More info and contact: https://mau.se/en/study-education/course/im202l/
The course (15 ECTS) offers an introduction to the Georgian language and culture, as well as basic knowledge of grammar and vocabulary. It includes all the necessary material online: texts, audio files, grammar, interactive exercises, a dictionary, and other sources. Assignments and exam are also conducted online.
