The housing shortage for students isn't just an issue in Stockholm – it also affects students here in Malmö.
Riksbyggen has calculated how many square meters an average 25-year-old can actually afford to buy, and built full-scale homes that show the result. In several cities, it comes down to just a couple of square meters.
39% of young adults are dependent on their parents to get a foothold in the housing market.
56% feel that their housing situation is holding them back from taking important steps into adult life.
From the Student Union Malmö’s perspective, we see this every term – students who turn down a place to study, commute unreasonably far, or live in insecure housing, simply because there's nowhere to live.
Riksbyggen is proposing, among other things, a starter loan for young adults and measures to boost housing construction. We think it's time housing – and student housing in particular – gets a bigger place in the debate, not least here in Malmö.
