WMU's marine environmental management department expanded quite a bit going into 2013. This prompted the previous ad-hoc department to form the Maritime Environmental Research Group, or MER Group. The group consists of experts on coastal and ocean environments, marine environmental challenges, operational strategies, as well as the management tools and instruments applied in integrated coastal and ocean management and Marine Spatial Planning. Building on funds secured from projects and consultancies, the group has now established a core team of researchers working in fields varying from Marine Spatial Planning, oil spill effects and preparedness, marine resources management, Arctic marine environment, invasive species, and ballast water management.
