🔭 Science Today: The Unseen

What shapes our universe is often invisible to the human eye. From particles smaller than atoms to galaxies billions of light-years away, science is constantly finding ways to reveal what we cannot see.

Join Science Today: The Unseen at the Nobel Prize Museum this Friday, 13 March, 17:00–21:00 for an evening of cutting-edge research, conversations, and music.

✨ Among the speakers is Giacomo Bortolini, PhD student at the Department of Astronomy at Stockholm University, who will talk about how the James Webb Space Telescope is revealing the hidden universe with its powerful infrared vision. From the most distant galaxies ever observed to breathtaking views of nearby galaxies, JWST is transforming our understanding of how galaxies, stars, and planets form and evolve.

📍 Nobel Prize Museum
🗓 Friday 13 March
⏰ 17:00–21:00

Come by for inspiring science talks, mingle with researchers, and enjoy music by DJ Anna Korsgren.

🎟 Tickets available via the Nobel Prize Museum website.

🎉 Congratulations to Dr. Anamaria Gkini on her brilliant PhD defense!

Her thesis, “Probing Superluminous Supernovae with X-shooter spectroscopy”, adds an important piece to the cosmic puzzle, helping us better understand the mysterious progenitors of these extreme and exotic explosions. 🌌💥

We are so proud of you, Anna and wish you all the best for the exciting journey ahead!

The past 4th-5th of February 2026 the 3rd National Swedish SKA Science Days 🇸🇪 took place in the Albano Campus in Stockholm 🌌

The Square Kilometer Array (SKA), divided into the SKA Low and SKA Mid arrays 📡📡, will represent the largest telescope array built ever on Earth, leveraging on a global collaboration of around 100 organisations spread across 20 countries in the world 🌎
Set to see the first light in ~2030, SKA will transform our understanding of the Universe, bridging the large scales of the earliest galaxies born in the Universe, close to the Big Bang 💥, to the relatively small scales of planet-forming disks and exo-planets 👽.

This year's edition of the Sweden SKA days brought together nearly 60 researchers from across Sweden and abroad working on the science, technology, and algorithm development related to SKA with the goal of updating the Swedish community on the latest developments of the array, explore the potential of Machine Learning and AI techniques for SKA, and encourage scientific collaborations among different research groups 💫

Our 2025 defense calendar has come to a close!

We wrapped up the year with the Licentiate defense of Yang Hu, who presented his work
“Probing Circumstellar Interaction in H-rich Superluminous Supernovae: The Case of SN 2021aaev” 🌟💥

Stay tuned for an exciting 2026 ahead!

Early Christmas gift for the supernova group? Yes! 🎅Astronomers discover the first gravitationally lensed superluminous supernova! 🌟

An team led by Oskar Klein Centre researcher Joel Johansson as well as many researchers in our department has discovered SN 2025wny, the first spatially resolved, gravitationally lensed superluminous supernova ever observed 🔭💥

The light from this explosion has travelled 10 billion years to reach us, from a time when the Universe was only 4 billion years old. Thanks to a natural cosmic magnifying glass created by two foreground galaxies 🌌, the supernova appears 50 times brighter, allowing ground-based telescopes to see it.

Even more exciting: gravitational lensing creates multiple images of the same explosion, arriving at Earth at different times ⏳. These time delays offer a powerful new way to measure how fast the Universe is expanding! 🤩

Beyond its cosmological importance, this distant supernova offers a rare glimpse into stellar explosions 🌟 and galaxy environments in the early Universe 🌠

This discovery marks a major step toward future 🚀breakthroughs with upcoming surveys like LSST, with follow-up observations already underway using Hubble and James Webb 🔭🔭

Congratulations to Dr. Gloria Canocchi! ✨
Gloria has successfully defended her PhD thesis,
“A Tale of Sodium in Stellar and Planetary Atmospheres” 🌟🪐🎓

Her work has made a significant contribution to stellar and exoplanet science, studying the sodium element using advanced modeling methods 💻 and machine learning techniques 🤖.

We wish her the very best of luck in her exciting future ahead! 🤞🤞🥳

Photobomb from our Christmas retreat! 🎄✨
A day full of science…but not only!

We enjoyed talks on the transition to industry, the story of our department 📖, our brand-new telescope 🔭, scientific writing ✍️, and how to travel in a more environmentally friendly way 🌍💚.

Of course, we also had some fun! 😄 We were challenged to build the highest tower using only spaghetti 🍝 and marshmallows 🤍. It was amazing to see a room full of astrophysicists trying to be… engineers 🏗️. And we did it: one group built a tower 115 cm high!

👏 Huge thanks to our amazing organizing committee for yet another unforgettable event! 🌟🎉

Congratulations to Dr. Bart van Baal for successfully defending his thesis ‘Illuminating Supernovae in Multiple Dimensions’.

Bart has been studying supernovae (exploding stars) by modeling their spectra hundreds of days after explosion. During his PhD, he developed the first-ever 3D NLTE radiative-transfer tool for late-time spectral synthesis…an incredible milestone in the field. So cool! 🌟🚀

We wish Bart the very best of luck in his next adventures! 🙌✨
