English summary: "Sweden's migration policy can be a health hazard: In a contribution to Dagens sämhalle, researchers at the Department of Public Health Sciences present the potential public health consequences of a restrictive migration policy. Long waiting times for decisions on residence permits and asylum increase the risk of poor mental health and shortened life expectancy among migrants, reports a new international study examining the link between migration policy and international migrants' health in high-income countries."

Commentary on our most recent publication:
"At a time in which international migration is at its peak and policy responses are becoming increasingly hostile, Sol Pía Juárez and colleagues have pulled together the evidence on the effects of non-health-related policies on migrant health in a systematic review and meta-analysis published in The Lancet Global Health. The study represents a timely, innovative, and highly needed contribution to migrant health research."

Migration policies and health often collide. Migration policies are rooted in concepts of state sovereignty and determine who can stay in a country and who must go, who can access services and who is excluded. In contrast, health policies are governed by the international human right to health, whic...

New research from the SMASH team!
"The findings of this systematic review and meta-analysis provide empirical evidence that non-health-specific public policies can affect migrant health, supporting the importance not only of adopting a Health in All Policies paradigm, but ultimately embracing a human-rights framework that draws attention to the rights of migrants under international law... While improving the evidence base is an important part of improving migrants' health, political action is also ultimately required."

Restrictive entry and integration policies are linked to poor migrant health outcomes in high-income countries. Efforts to improve the health of migrants would benefit from adopting a Health in All Policies perspective.

New study from SMASH researchers!

"The current study shows that young refugees have much higher risks of poor labour market outcomes compared to native Swedes... The risks of poor labour market outcomes among young refugees are in some instances comparable to those of intercountry adoptees, suggesting that barriers related to ethnic discrimination on the labour market may also be at play. Obtaining a secondary education is protective against poor labour market outcomes among all groups... This underscores the potential of education in increasing labour market participation among young refugees and thereby improving their socioeconomic integration in society."
