In the fall, we had the pleasure of having as a guest at EHL, Camelia Dewan, an Associate Professor in Cultural Anthropology at Uppsala University! Here is what Camelia shared about her time at ours!

🔹Why did you want to come to EHL?
I was grateful for the opportunity to spend time at the Environmental Humanities Laboratory while working on my second monograph, Living with Toxic Development. EHL's strengths in environmental history and the history of science offered perspectives that help me think beyond disciplinary boundaries and deepen the anthropological questions at the heart of the project.

🔹How has your experience been?
Incredibly stimulating. Presenting my work in the Higher Seminar Series and receiving thoughtful feedback from scholars across disciplines pushed me to rethink key assumptions and sharpen the book's arguments. The conversations have been both generous and challenging in the best way.

🔹What will you take with you?
New ideas, new collaborations, and a renewed appreciation for interdisciplinary research. The engagement with environmental historians and historians of science has helped me complicate and nuance how I think about toxicity, development, and environmental justice. I'll carry those insights with me as I continue writing the book.

🔹 Favourite nature spot?
I love the water in Tantolunden, Södermalm, where the mandarin ducks live. Stockholm is my favourite city in the world. I love being surrounded by water in my everyday life

Thank you Camelia for your time with us and luckily, we still get to interact with Camelia and her work!

🌱Join us this Thursday when we welcome Helena Norberg-Hodge for an evening talk at ABF-huset about how the future needs to be local🌱

Helena is a linguist, author, filmmaker, founder of Local Futures, and recipient of the Right Livelihood Award. She is on a rare visit to Sweden to share her rich insights and experiences in what happens in communities when we start localising economies. She has been a leading voice in the movement to strengthen local economies for over half a century, arguing that localisation means more jobs, less waste and pollution, stronger and more prosperous communities, and creates institutions that people can trust. Her work calls for a new orientation – one that prioritises the real needs of people and the planet over corporate profits.

During the evening, the following will be discussed:
- How can we strengthen local economies
- Concrete examples of how economic systems can be organised in smaller, more resilient and democratically rooted contexts.
- What is required for a more resilient and human-rooted economy
- How globalisation affects local communities and democracy

📅 4th of June

We have the pleasure of having Davide De Lillis with us as an EHL guest this spring. Here’s what Davide shared about his time here now at EHL:

🔹 Tell us a bit about yourself and what you work on
“I am a multidisciplinary artist, curator and Feldenkrais practitioner. My research combines somatic practices, screendance, and environmental humanities. I’m interested in how embodied experience and moving images can shape the way we relate to the more-than-human world.”

🔹Why did you want to come to EHL?
“I was drawn to EHL because of its strong interdisciplinary approach and its openness to dialogue between artistic research and environmental humanities. It feels like a space where different perspectives can meet and meaningfully inform each other.”

🔹 What are you hoping for during your guest visit here?
“I hope to engage in exchanges and dialogues with artists and researchers whose work intersects with mine, creating opportunities for mutual enrichment. I also see this visit as a valuable opportunity to build new collaborations.”

🔹 Do you have a favourite nature spot?
“One place I feel deeply connected to is the Lepini Mountains (Monti Lepini), above the town I come from in Italy, Cori. After living in different cities for many years, I’ve come to realise that the smell of wild mint instantly makes me feel at home — my body relaxes, and my breath and heartbeat slow down. In this mountainous landscape, even just walking through the grass and rocks, the scent of wild mint seems to permeate everything. From there, you can also see the Tyrrhenian Sea opening up the horizon, which helps me let go of anxieties and clear my thoughts.” ( See image 2)

Thank you Davide, for the many valuable perspectives you are bringing to EHL!

Davide has also hosted two eco-screen dance workshops for us this spring, letting us experience how screen-dance can connect us to our surroundings. We are sharing some photos from these lovely workshops (Images 3 & 4)

Welcome to a workshop for students at KTH who want to discuss what they wish for in their education at KTH, where the input will support the development of a new master's programme at KTH.

📅 26th of May
🕐 17.15-19:00
📍 KTH Environmental Humaniites Laboratory, KTH Campus
✔️ Sign up, we will provide sandwiches and fika! Sign up here: https://www.kth.se/ehl/ehl-events/upcoming-ehl-events/student-workshop-on-future-education-1.1471310?date=2026-05-26&orgdate=2026-05-12&length=1&orglength=0

The KTH Division of the History of Science, Technology and the Environment is working on developing a new humanities-oriented master’s programme at KTH. It will be the first of its kind at the university, and reflect the division’s primary research as well as projects of the KTH Environmental Humanities Laboratory and the Centre for Anthropocene History.

One of the goals is to prepare students with critical and reflective skills and knowledge to make connections between their technical education and broader social, political and cultural contexts, both in Sweden and globally.

In developing this programme, we want to hear the voices of students and understand their needs!

🔹Are there skills, knowledge areas, and competences you, as a student, wish for?
🔹 Perhaps there is certain knowledge that you feel is important in your career to face the uncertainty of the future, to deal with the complexity of global challenges?
🔹Or skills that can contribute to a just and functioning society.

If you are a student and have reflected on what sort of education you think you need for the future, we would love to hear from you!

Who can join: The workshop is for KTH students in all programmes and years. Recently graduated KTH students (within the last three years) are also welcome.

We were excited to host Naomi Oreskes as part of our new series of talks and events Changing Earth.

This is the kind of public event we were hoping for! About 280 people, 40 minutes of engaged Q and A with the audience, followed by a mingle that was still going strong at the venue’s closing time! 🌱Is the future local? Can local economies be the answer to the many global crises?

“Yes!” is the clear answer according to Helena Norberg-Hodge, whom we are excited to welcome to Stockholm for an insightful lecture on localization, on the 4th of June at ABF huset.
Helena, the founder of Local Futures and recipient of the Right Livelihood Award, has been a leading voice in the movement to strengthen local economies for over half a century, with a particular focus on food systems.

Localization, as she calls it, means more jobs, less waste and pollution, stronger and more prosperous communities – and institutions that people can trust. Her work calls for a new orientation – one that prioritizes the real needs of people and the planet over corporate profits.

During the evening, the following will be discussed:
- How can we strengthen local economies
- Concrete examples of how economic systems can be organized in smaller, more resilient and democratically rooted contexts.
- What is required for a more resilient and human-rooted economy
- How globalization affects local communities and democracy

We hope to see many of you join us this evening with Helena Nordberg-Hodge to learn how we can make the future local!

Darkness Matters by Costanza Julia Bani

Thu 7 May, Wisdome Stockholm /

A meditative journey from dusk till dawn, a homage to nocturnal ecosystems and the Milky Way - revealing what still survives, rather than what is lost, in a world increasingly flooded by artificial light. From fireflies flickering in Tuscan olive groves to wolves in alpine forests and ibexes on mountain ridges, the film follows the passage of night across altitudinal zones in Italy's Maritime Alps.

A Work-in-Progress of this piece was shown at our film festival, Crosscuts in 2024, and will now have its premiere in its full-dome form. The premiere is followed by a Q&A with the artist Costanza Julia Bani.

Dome Dreaming, Stockholm & Malmö, 7–12 May 2026.
