Professor Paul Zieger has been awarded 4.33 million SEK from the Swedish Research Council (VR) to investigate if microplastics can influence Arctic clouds and climate.

Microplastic particles have been found everywhere, from busy cities to remote polar regions but we still don’t know how they behave inside clouds. This project will collect cloud particles at the Zeppelin Observatory on Svalbard, identify any microplastics present, and test whether they can act as tiny “seeds” for ice formation.

Because clouds play a crucial role in how quickly the Arctic warms, even small changes in cloud behaviour could have big consequences.

This research will help improve climate models and deepen our understanding of how pollution affects Earth’s most vulnerable regions.

A huge congratulations to the team!

Join Researcher Matthew Salter as he takes us aboard their brand-new floating laboratory that measures how the air and sea meet and how that meeting impacts our climate.

From sea-water flows and sensors measuring greenhouse gases to instruments that capture aerosol particles rising from the ocean surface, this platform is a game-changer in studying coastal ecosystems and climate interactions.

Big congratulations to Associate Professor Karine Elihn for securing nearly SEK 5 million in project funding from Forte - Forskningsrådet för hälsa, arbetsliv och välfärd to investigate the toxicity of quartz dust emitted from composite worktops, an issue of growing concern for both workplace safety and environmental health.

We’re excited to follow her journey and the outcomes of this project!

Meet Assistant Professor Ida Rahu. Chemist, coder, and proud dog mum to Lumi.

When Lumi fell ill from a medication reaction, Rahu realised how much individual differences matter in toxicity studies. Today, she’s using data science and machine learning to understand how genes and the environment interact to affect health and to make chemical safety assessments more personal and precise.

“AI should never replace the scientist. But it can help us see things we couldn’t before.”

We’re hiring three postdocs in Arctic Ocean methane research!

Join our Biogeochemistry unit to explore how methane moves through the rapidly changing Arctic Ocean.

We are recruiting 3 Post-doc Researchers for:

Subsea permafrost and methane — exploring permafrost as a source, sink, and conduit (deadline 6 Nov)

Methane oxidation — combining experiments, modelling, and optional field work (deadline 6 Nov)

Slope hydrates & Atlantification — investigating hydrate destabilization and warming inflows (deadline 28 Nov)

📍 Based in Stockholm, with Arctic fieldwork opportunities.

Our students get hands-on with permafrost at ForskarFredag last week!

Two exciting activities ran in parallel and our students played a leading role in both.

At Vetenskapens Hus, PhD student Larissa Frey and Master’s student Joshua Hellmann guided high school students in building “permafrost columns” from crushed ice, soil and sand — complete with miniature 3D-printed houses. Their aim? To show how thawing ground can disrupt ecosystems, infrastructure, and climate feedbacks.

Meanwhile, at AlbaNova University Centre, PhD student Saskia Läubli and master’s student ambassadors Greta Tödtmann, Julia Wenhuda, and Niccolò Mattiotti welcomed visitors to our permafrost exhibit. They showcased a real permafrost sample, interactive carbon stock displays, and images from Arctic field campaigns — sparking deep conversations about climate change and scientific exploration.

A huge thank you to our student team for their enthusiasm, expertise, and dedication! You helped bring Arctic science to life for curious young minds.

New PhD position in Environmental Science

What happens to pollutants in the deepest parts of our oceans?

We are recruiting a doctoral student to join the Contaminant Chemistry Unit in the project “Small but efficient – can hadal sediment microbes degrade persistent chemicals?"

You’ll investigate contaminants in deep-sea trench sediments (6–11 km below the surface!) and explore the role of microbial communities in breaking down pollutants. This is a chance to push the boundaries of environmental science while working in an international research environment.

🗓️ Full-time, 4-year PhD position

Inside the stalled plastics treaty negotiations.

This summer in Geneva, 183 nations gathered to negotiate the world’s first legally binding treaty to end plastic pollution. The talks ended without an agreement but for researchers Prado Domercq and Marlene Ågerstrand, it marked a powerful beginning.

Prado, attending as part of the Scientists’ Coalition for an Effective Plastics Treaty, describes the experience as “overwhelming but also an exercise of democracy.”

Marlene Ågerstand calls Stockholm University’s UN accreditation a breakthrough, but also warns of the imbalance between industry lobbyists and scientific voices.

Read the full story of what it means for scientists to step into the political arena and why their presence matters more than ever.
