PhD student sharing research at the Africa Dance Biennale 2026
🔶 🔶 🔶
Gwen Rakotovao, PhD student at SKH, recently had the opportunity to present artistic research at the Biennale de la Danse en Afrique – Édition Sénégal 2026 (Africa Dance Biennale), held at the École des Sables in Toubab Dialaw, Senegal.
Recognised as one of the leading international dance events on the African continent, the Biennale brought together dancers, choreographers, researchers, curators, producers, and cultural professionals from across Africa and beyond. The programme created a dynamic space for exchange on dance as artistic expression, cultural memory, social dialogue, and social transformation.
A particular highlight was participation in the roundtable discussion Danse au féminin, presided over by Germaine Acogny and moderated by Dr. Aïssatou Bangoura. The panel brought together artists, researchers, and cultural practitioners, including Rosy Timas, Fatou Cissé, Hélène Neveu, and Khoudia Touré, to discuss contemporary perspectives on dance and artistic research.
Participation in this international gathering provided an opportunity to contribute to ongoing conversations on dance research and artistic practice while representing the university's academic community in a global context.
Beyond the performances and discussions, the Biennale fostered meaningful intercultural exchange, highlighting the role of dance as a powerful tool for dialogue, connection, and knowledge sharing across borders.
