📣We are building Sweden’s first testbed and competence hub for Friction Stir Welding! 📣

New equipment will be installed at Production Technology Centre in the coming spring. Here, companies will be able to test new materials and product ideas together with researchers. Six companies are already involved in the initiative, and there is room for more industry partners.

“This technology opens up entirely new opportunities for more sustainable advanced manufacturing in sectors such as aerospace and automotive,” says Vivek Patel, Professor of Welding Technology at University West.

🚆 How can train managers practise handling threatening passengers in a way that feels real?

Together with SJ, our researchers have developed VR-based training that allows train managers to practise realistic and challenging situations in a safe environment. The results show great potential for the future of professional development.

“VR makes the situations feel more realistic than traditional role-play exercises. That makes a big difference,” says Sebastian Bergqvist, instructor and train crew member at SJ.

Nolato AB and the technology companies Hypr10 and Tenstar Simulations also participated in the project.

How can industrial companies manage technological change in a human-centred way?

As new ways of working, new technologies, and new competence requirements transform industry, companies need to rethink both learning and work-related wellbeing.

But how can competence development be handled in a sustainable way with employees at the centre?

This is what a research team is exploring together with Scania, Södra Skogsägarna, and InLead Automation in the Co-WORK 5.0 research project.

“Learning can be experienced both positively and negatively. New knowledge requirements may be stressful for some and stimulating for others. Companies have a lot to consider when planning and implementing competence development,” says Amin Nasaji, PhD student in Work-Integrated Learning.

Behind the interdisciplinary project is a broad research team that brings together expertise in business administration, health, and production technology. In addition to Amin Nasaji, the team includes Professor Kristina Areskoug Josefsson, Professor Anna Karin Olsson, and Associate Professor Kristina Eriksson.

New Head of the Department of Engineering Science appointed 🥳

Tehseen Aslam has been appointed the new Head of the Department of Engineering Science at University West.

Tehseen is currently Vice-Rector for Collaboration and Senior Lecturer in Automation Engineering at the University of Skövde. He has many years of leadership experience within academia, in both research and education, and has worked strategically with collaboration between academia, industry and the public sector.

“The decision to appoint Tehseen Aslam is primarily based on his many years of successful leadership experience within academia, both in research and education. He has also worked strategically in a university-wide role focused on collaboration, which is highly significant given that collaboration is central to our mission,” says Mats Jägstam, Vice-Chancellor of University West and Chair of the recruitment committee.

Tehseen is already well acquainted with University West, particularly within engineering and technology, and is looking forward to taking on his new role.

“It feels truly exciting, enjoyable, and also somewhat life-changing to step into the role of Head of Department at University West. The university has several strengths that attracted me to apply. These include its outstanding research in production technology and, equally importantly, its clear profile as a collaborative university,” says Tehseen Aslam.

New research could revolutionise the manufacturing of customised products.

Together with several industrial and technology companies, researchers at University West and Chalmers University of Technology are developing advanced AI-based robots capable of assembling components and interacting with operators.

“This is an exciting project where we take a broader approach to industrial automation in order to create smart manufacturing,” says Sudha Ramasamy, who leads the research project.

“I hope it can help change perceptions of industrial jobs. With more sustainable and flexible ways of working for operators, these roles can become more attractive.”
The research is carried out in close collaboration with Volvo Trucks, Chalmers Industriteknik, and the tech companies Hitachi Energy Sweden, Binar Solutions and Repli5.
