Umeå Institute of Design UID is located in northernmost Sweden, and is ranked as one of the top industrial design educations in the world. European students pay no tuition fees.

UID offers highly competitive, professional and international industrial design educational programmes supported by exceptional research, technical facilities and resources. Nearly all projects are carried out in collaboration with external partners and the school successfully cooperates with both the local community and international companies such as Volvo, Toyota and Sony Ericsson. Students come from over 30 different countries, and education is run in English on most of our educations.

Congratulations to Ylva Fernaeus on her installation as Professor of Design at Umeå Institute of Design today. 🎉

Ylva’s research explores how we can design more sustainable technological futures by making visible what does not yet exist. Her work invites us to think critically about the relationship between reality and vision, and the role of design in a world where the boundaries between the real and the imagined are becoming increasingly blurred.

As Ylva puts it:
”Designers must work openly, critically and take responsibility for their decisions, always in relation to challenges in the physical world.”

We are proud to celebrate this important milestone and look forward to Ylva’s continued contributions to design research, education, and the development of more thoughtful and responsible technological futures.

From future worlds to future interactions. 🌍✨

Last week, our first-year MFA Interaction Design students prepared for the Futures Bazaar together with students from the Cognitive Interaction Design course, a playful design fiction workshop where imagined futures become tangible experiences.

Working in teams, students explored future scenarios such as Resilient, Green, Wild, Playful and Creative Futures. Using found materials and everyday objects, they built speculative artefacts that might exist in these worlds, then brought them to life through storytelling, debate and exchange at the bazaar.

The workshop marked the beginning of a journey that will lead to the creation of future organisations, brands, products and digital interfaces, challenging students to think critically about how design shapes the worlds we may one day inhabit.

What can a vegetable peeler teach us about design?

Quite a lot, it turns out.

During a BFA2 course in ergonomics, students explored how people interact with handheld tools through observation, analysis and user testing.

The project moved between the studio and the field. Students evaluated everyday kitchen tools, interviewed staff from Umeå Municipality’s Streets and Parks department, and studied how professional users work with pruning and maintenance tools in public environments.

Different contexts, different users, same design challenge: understanding the relationship between people and the tools they use.

Meet Petra Jääskeläinen, our new postdoctoral researcher at UmArts and UID

Petra recently completed her PhD at KTH, where she explored how we might rethink Creative AI through more-than-human perspectives and environmental posthumanities.

At UmaArts and UID, her research continues through a two-year Kempe-funded postdoctoral project investigating new ways of understanding and designing Creative AI. The project is developed in connection with the upcoming AI art exhibition at Bildmuseet.

By questioning the assumptions that shape today's AI systems, Petra's work opens up new possibilities for how design can contribute to more thoughtful, critical, and sustainable relationships between creativity, technology, and the world around us.
