Meet two NUS Computing alumni quietly making Singapore more multilingual – one government website at a time.⁠

Harish Venkatesan and Hsu Zhong Jun are part of the team behind Polyglot, an AI-powered translation widget that lets Singaporeans read government content in Chinese, Malay, and Tamil. It launched recently on the MDDI and Smart Nation websites, with the longer-term goal of making translations a standard feature across all government websites.⁠

We sat down with both of them to hear about their NUS years, why they chose public service tech, and what it means to build something most users will never know exists.⁠

🎉 Congratulations to Associate Professor Hari Garg Krishna on being conferred the Honorary Fellowship.

The Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering extends its heartfelt appreciation to Assoc Prof Hari for his 25 years of dedicated service and invaluable contributions to NUS ECE.

Over the years, he has played a pivotal role in leading the Communications and Networks research group, driving entrepreneurship initiatives that translated NUS research into startups, and shaping the education of generations of ECE students through curriculum innovation. His leadership in steering the department through multiple successful Engineering Accreditation Board (EAB) accreditation visits has also been instrumental to our continued excellence.

Thank you, Assoc Prof Hari, for your unwavering commitment, leadership, and lasting contributions to the NUS ECE community.

30 years. One class. Countless memories.
The NUS Electrical Engineering Class of 1996 reunited on 11 July 2026 with nearly 80 alumni, faculty and guests for an unforgettable evening of friendship, laughter and nostalgia.
Beyond celebrating old friendships, the class also gave back by contributing almost S$68,000 to establish a Bursary for future CDE students, and presented a commemorative calligraphy artwork to the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
Once classmates, always classmates. ❤️⚡

🎉 Congratulations to Professor Dipti Srinivasan on receiving the Outstanding Paper Award from IEEE Transactions on Artificial Intelligence for the paper, "SpinalNet: Deep Neural Network with Gradual Input".

Presented at the IEEE World Congress on Computational Intelligence (WCCI 2026), this prestigious annual award recognises the paper published in the journal that has demonstrated outstanding technical quality and significant research impact.

Inspired by the human spinal cord and somatosensory system, SpinalNet introduces a novel deep neural network architecture that processes information gradually, enabling AI models to achieve higher accuracy while reducing computational cost. Since its publication in 2023, the work has demonstrated state-of-the-art performance and has been adopted by researchers worldwide, contributing to the development of more efficient and scalable AI systems.

Congratulations to Prof Dipti and her collaborators on this well-deserved international recognition! 👏

He did his BEng and PhD right here in ECE.
Today, Suranga Nanayakkara is Vice Dean (Communications) at NUS School of Computing and he’s just written a book about everything in between.

He grew up in Sri Lanka speaking only Sinhala, and arrived in Singapore with just $1,000.His new book isn’t the polished success story you’d expect. It’s the failures, the self-doubt, the moments he nearly gave up.

“We are not extraordinary. We’re the same people. What matters is some courage, some self-belief and resilience.”

5,000 copies are now headed to schools across Sri Lanka, backed by the Ministry of Education

From NUS ECE PhD student to Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia honouree 🚀

🎉 Congratulations to Dr. Xingyi Yang, an NUS ECE PhD graduate supervised by Dr. Xinchao Wang, on being named to the Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia 2026 list in the Healthcare & Science category!

From his PhD journey at NUS ECE to his current role as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Dr. Yang has been advancing research at the intersection of generative AI, spatial intelligence, and AI for healthcare and science.

His research focuses on building efficient and controllable AI systems that can generate visual content, understand 3D space, and reason about dynamic real-world environments. His work has received more than 5,000 citations to date, including over 1,000 citations for his 2020 paper on using AI to diagnose COVID-19.

His inclusion in the Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia 2026 list recognises his contributions to AI research and innovation, as well as the broader impact of research nurtured at NUS ECE.

💡 How can we solve some of the world's most complex optimization problems faster and with less energy?

Congratulations to Mr. Shuhan Yang from Prof Hyunsoo Yang's research group for winning the Best Poster Award at the 2026 International Workshop on Ising Machine! 🏆

His award-winning research, "Magnetic Tunnel Junction-Based High-Order Probabilistic Ising Machine", demonstrates a novel spin-based computing approach that can efficiently find near-optimal solutions to challenging problems, paving the way for high-speed, large-scale, and energy-efficient optimization.

This achievement reflects the innovative research being carried out at NUS ECE in the areas of spintronics and next-generation computing technologies.

From his PhD journey at NUS ECE to his current role as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Oxford, Dr. Kevin has been pushing the boundaries of AI research. His work focuses on developing multimodal AI agents that can observe, reason, and act alongside humans, with the potential to accelerate scientific discovery and transform how we interact with intelligent systems.

With over 3,000 citations to his research contributions, his achievements reflect both his dedication to advancing AI and the impact of research nurtured at NUS ECE.
