📌 University leaders from across Southeast Asia gathered in Singapore last week for the 17th ASEAN University Network ( ) Rectors' Meeting and the 41st AUN Board of Trustees (BOT) Meeting!

🌏 Hosted by at Grand Hyatt Singapore, one big question was on the table: how ASEAN universities can champion student-centred leadership?

🎙️ Three university presidents took the floor for the opening keynotes:
🔹 Prof Tan Eng Chye (National University of Singapore) set the stage with insights on global positioning and partnerships
🔹 Br Bernard Oca (De La Salle University) turned the focus to well-being and holistic student development
🔹 Prof Pongruk Sribanditmongkol (มหาวิทยาลัยเชียงใหม่ Chiang Mai University) looked ahead to what it takes to build future-ready universities

💬 Breakout sessions translated key themes into actionable recommendations on student-centred leadership, digital transformation, and student well-being. The sessions were moderated by Dr Hazri Kifle (Universiti Brunei Darussalam), Prof Ova Emilia (Universitas Gadjah Mada), and Br Bernard Oca (De La Salle University), with rapporteurs Assoc Prof Lum Sau Kim (NUS Global Relations), Prof Wening Udasmoro (Universitas Gadjah Mada), and Prof Yvonne Lim (Universiti Malaya) synthesising the discussions and recommendations.

✨ NUS colleagues also presented two proposals:
🌱 Prof Koh Lian Pin (National University of Singapore, Faculty of Science; NUS Sustainability) introduced a Planetary Boundaries Science and Solutions Hub for Southeast Asia, paving the way for nations to chart their own path toward sustainability and resilience
🎻 Prof Chan Tze Law (NUS Centre For the Arts, NUS Office of Student Affairs; Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music) envisioned an ASEAN Varsity Orchestra, harmonising student mobility and artistic collaboration among member universities

📋 On behalf of the Chairman of the AUN BOT, Ms Pennapa Kanchana (Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation of Thailand) led the AUN BOT meeting, where various AUN thematic networks shared updates on their ongoing initiatives and plans for the year ahead. The programme closed with a visit to the Sustainable Singapore Gallery at Marina Barrage.

Meet Niveditha from NUS Business School, National University of Singapore, who spent a semester at University of Sydney in Australia. 🇦🇺 🛫

For Niveditha, exchange was a chance to embrace the unfamiliar. Navigating a new city independently taught her adaptability and proactiveness as she sought help from friends, professors and her roommates. 🤝

That openness extended to the people she met too—connecting with peers from diverse backgrounds showed her that genuine connection transcends cultural barriers, from deep conversations about life and aspirations to lighter ones about movies and food. 💭 🗣️

Meet Mandy from NUS Faculty of Science, who spent a semester at The Australian National University . 🇦🇺 🛫

After years of living in an endless cycle of deadlines and responsibilities, exchange allowed Mandy to discover life beyond academics, achievements and expectations. 🌏

And it was truly one of the best decisions she ever made! Living in Australia reminded her just how lucky she was—walking amongst canopies of eucalyptus trees and the occasional kangaroo hopping past her doorstep like it owned the neighbourhood.🦘Every day felt like stepping into a National Geographic documentary. 🎥 🌳

But most importantly, living there independently taught her one empowering lesson: she could thrive on her own—from managing every part of her daily life to confidently exploring a theme park solo! 🎢

Thank you, Mandy, for showing us how life-changing an exchange can be. ✨

Meet Yunci from NUS Business School, National University of Singapore, who spent a semester at Korea University. 🇰🇷 🛫

If Yunci could describe her exchange in one sentence, she'd pick this quote from French novelist Marcel Proust: "The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes." 🚢

In many ways, exchange gave her fresh perspectives on South Korea, its people, and herself. One of her biggest takeaways was gaining a deeper understanding of the Korean concept of filial piety ('hyo’) and how it shapes leadership styles and team dynamics. As a Leadership and Human Capital Management major, she now draws on these insights to further develop herself as a leader, putting them into practice in her CCA roles while working with diverse teams.🤝🫂

🌏 joined 45 institutions within the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU) at the 30th Annual Presidents' Meeting, hosted by The Chinese University of Hong Kong 香港中文大學 - CUHK. On this milestone occasion, university leaders discussed AI in teaching and learning, sustainable and inclusive higher education, and developments across APRU programmes and initiatives.

💬 Assoc Prof Lum Sau Kim (AVP Global Relations) spoke at the APRU Senior International Leaders' Meeting alongside colleagues from the APRU Secretariat, Adelaide University, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology - HKUST, and UC San Diego, exploring how universities can remain open and globally connected amid rapid change, and what inclusive engagement looks like beyond access alone.

Meet Xinyi from NUS College, who spent a semester at Peking University in China. 🇨🇳 🛫

Curious about AI ethics, she found her perfect match in Beijing—home to strong philosophy courses and a fast-developing AI landscape. But why PKU specifically? She had met PKU students who were intellectually confident and open, encouraging her to experience the school environment firsthand.

True enough, her time at PKU taught her to slow down and listen closely to what truly interested her—leading her to pursue co-curricular activities she never had time for back home, and even rethink her future academic path entirely. 📚
