Singapore's first arts university, formed by an alliance of NAFA and LASALLE.

The University of the Arts Singapore (UAS) aims to enrich lives and build a better future through multidisciplinary arts education & collaboration. Guided by strong legacies in contemporary practices, leveraging on tradition and cultural heritage, UAS is formed by an alliance of pioneering arts institutions LASALLE College of the Arts and the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA), who have produced generations of artists, designers and creative leaders. Collectively, UAS will continue to grow partnerships with the arts and cultural sectors in Singapore and build international networks.

We put Ray Chel, BA (Hons) Design Practice student and NAFA Diploma in Fashion graduate, to the test by giving her a series of unexpected design choices, from different eras and silhouettes to materials and aesthetics.

The challenge was simple: take what you’re given and turn it into a cohesive fashion concept.

While sketching is an important part of the design process, fashion is about more than designing a garment. A fashion education goes far beyond putting ideas on paper. Students learn to develop concepts, make creative decisions, work with materials and translate their ideas into tangible outcomes. They can form the foundation for careers across fashion design, styling, product development, creative direction and other creative roles, while also building an understanding of how ideas can be developed into products, brands and businesses.

What happens when you combine music education with content creation?

For Jovanna, it meant finding a new way to share her passion for teaching as well as music.

While studying Music Teaching at NAFA, she also took Digital Media Exploration, which sparked her interest in content creation. She also founded Polaris Music Academy. Today, she combines her background in music and teaching with digital content to make music more accessible and engaging to a wider audience.

Her journey is a reminder that education can provide both a strong foundation and the opportunity to explore interests beyond your main discipline.

We caught up with a few of the newest creatives to hear about the ideas they are bringing with them, the experiences they are looking forward to, and what they hope to explore during their time at the University.

Reimagining tradition for tomorrow ✨

The University of Arts Singapore (UAS) recently launched a new UAS In Conversation series, with the inaugural session featuring internationally renowned textile designer Josephine “Obin” Komara, exploring The Perfect Cloth: The Living Art of Batik Design.

The evening brought together students from LASALLE College of the Arts (LASALLE) and Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA), alongside educators, industry practitioners and members of the arts community, for a vibrant exchange of perspectives and experiences at UAS. We were also honoured to have Singapore’s Ambassador to Indonesia, Mr Kwok F**k Seng, and Mrs Kwok join us.

Drawing from her lifelong practice, Ibu Obin shared insights into the patience, precision and care embedded in the meticulous processes of batik, and how a deep-rooted respect for the craft can continue to inspire new ways of making and thinking.

This was followed by a panel discussion moderated by Ms Victoria Ho, Programme Leader, BA (Hons) Fashion Design & Textiles, LASALLE, with panellists Ms Lee Chor Lin, Independent Museum & Art Consultant, and Mr Anthony Tan, Associate Dean, School of Fashion Studies, NAFA.

By bringing different voices together, the discussion created an important space to reflect on how traditional knowledge can remain relevant within an evolving creative landscape, contributing to discourse on arts and design.

What happens when rich heritage meets a new generation of makers? ✨

Last week, students from LASALLE College of the Arts and Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) joined an immersive batik workshop organised by the University of the Arts Singapore, led by renowned Indonesian textile designer Josephine “Obin” Komara.

Students experimented with traditional tools, textiles and techniques, discovering the patience, precision and joy behind the craft. Along the way, they explored how centuries-old traditions can continue to evolve through bold, fresh perspectives.

By learning through making, students had the chance to discover, experiment and reflect, bringing the craft to life in a hands-on way while learning directly from an established practitioner.
