Earlier this semester, approximately 400 first-years from the Class of 2030 gathered in Saga Dining Hall for the annual Community Conversations, which invites them to pause, step outside their circles and explore what it means to share a space together.

Across six sessions, students engaged with four simple prompts: What am I grateful for? What am I prioritising? What am I carrying? What conversations do I want more of?

Oscillating between silent writing and group conversation, participants' surveyed their anonymised responses on sheets across the Hall, culminated in an interactive gallery reflecting the pulse of the Class of 2030.

Community Conversations extends beyond a one-off experience to seed habits of empathy, active listening, and openness across our community; a cultural "permission to be honest" that travels far beyond the four walls of the dining hall into the college's everyday spaces.

When an AI agent orders 1,000 pizzas, leaks a confidential document or makes an unauthorised trade, who actually takes the blame?

As AI transitions from a tool we use to an agent we delegate to – like Meta’s Muse or OpenAI’s autonomous models – the line between helpful delegation and loss of control is becoming increasingly blurred.

In a compelling commentary for The Straits Times, Prof Simon Chesterman, Dean of NUS College, highlights a crucial truth: "My AI did it" cannot become the 21st-century equivalent of "The dog ate my homework."

Key insights from the piece:

📌 Human accountability is non-negotiable: Regulators like Singapore's Ministry of Law and MAS are making it clear – humans remain responsible for the work and choices produced by AI.

📌 Beware "lovable" AI: Friendly avatars and cute interfaces encourage us to hand over control of our digital lives, but granting legal personality to AI could become a convenient shield for corporate liability.

📌 Setting red lines: Just as Singapore draws strict regulatory lines around human cloning, we need hard limits on AI: No accountable human = no deployment.

Before you grant your next digital assistant total access to your inbox, calendar and bank account, ask yourself: Who will answer when it does something you didn't expect?

🛋️ Treasured spaces on campus break beyond four walls. They're where friendships form, ideas take shape and sometimes even where love stories begin.

Chatterbox has been part of the University Scholars Programme (USP) and NUS College (NUSC) student life since 2005. What started as a literal "box": an office-cubicle structure that students lovingly pieced together from partition walls, with sofas, beanbags and an open pantry, all selected and sourced from items around campus, is today a beloved corner to generations of students.

Chatterbox’s journey has gone through different transitions — from Block ADM to Cinnamon College and now to the new NUSC campus. Along the way, it has been a special place to host debates, a space to build stage sets for productions, fundraisers, floor events, late-night mugging sessions and a place to celebrate graduations and weddings. 💍Today, Chatterbox finds a new home at the Elm Buttery Patio, a space also once treasured by the Yale-NUS community for late night snacks and conversations.

As NUSCC President Yee Jia Jie puts it: "We hope Chatterbox brings together people across different backgrounds, interests and years. It should be a place where spontaneous interactions can happen."

The venues have changed, but the wooden sign remains, and so does the collective communities it stands for. For students past and present, it's simply “home”. 🏠

Congratulations to our students, Anna Wee, Ashley Lui and Hung Zoe Mae! 🎬✨

Their short film, Anohak ("fisherman" in the Bajau Laut language), was selected and screened at the Association of American Geographers (AAG) Conference 2026 in San Francisco earlier this year!

Created during an NUSC course in 2024, Anohak examines how the Bajau Laut’s fishing practices shape their political relationships with the state and market forces. Following four protagonists – Posoi (Azmil), Salim, Palsi, and Nulsi – the documentary highlights how fishing drives daily survival and aspiration under conditions of statelessness, contrasting undocumented and documented lives. While their labour sustains Sabah’s fisheries, systemic legal exclusion leaves many Bajau Laut with restricted access to healthcare, education, formal work and mobility.

Anna: "Beyond the documentary's screening at AAG 2026 being celebrated as a student accomplishment, I really hope that it is received as a medium for storytelling and advocacy for the Bajau Laut youths who inspired and co-created this film. I would think that our role was weaving together their narratives as collaborators who did not share their lived experiences".

Ashley: "We're really grateful to Prof Keng-Khoon for always reaching out to us with many opportunities to showcase our work. I hope the film is able to shine a light on the hardworking, capable and resilient community whom we are grateful to have worked so closely with, and the persistent systemic injustices they face.”

Zoe Mae: "Be ever curious and open to listening to the stories of both human and non-human subjects around you (yes, even buildings and the lush biodiversity on this earth have stories to tell as well!). Notice both the small and large details, and retain a sense of wonder that helps you to ask questions and might lead you not only to answers, but perhaps deeper, important questions."

Our NUSC students gathered for a wonderful Mid-Autumn celebration filled with laughter, warm Chinese tea, hand-crafted glutinous rice balls and insightful exchanges on how different cultures celebrate this season.

What does it look like to help students not just learn science, but think and work like scientists? 🔬

Our September edition of Teacher Talk brought together aspiring and current Science educators across the NUS College community for a lively evening of thoughtful conversation with Dr Loo Yoke Leng, former MOE Science teacher and current NUSC faculty member. Drawing from her rich experiences as a teacher, researcher and textbook writer, Dr Loo led conversations on everything from sparking curiosity in the classroom to rethinking assessment, offering educators at different stages of their journeys a valuable opportunity to learn from and with one another – a reminder that educators, too, are always learning! 📖
