For Department of Statistics and Data Science, NUS student Appana Jishnu, being among the first 14 students to receive the FoS 95th Anniversary Bursary this year has opened doors to opportunities that might otherwise have been out of reach.
The bursary enables him to make the most of his campus experience, while easing the financial pressure on his family. “This allows my parents to focus on taking care of the house and their health,” he says.
The support made it possible for Jishnu to embrace learning opportunities further afield. His exchange programme at Vilnius University in Lithuania presented him the perfect opportunity to explore Europe. Visiting France, Germany, Latvia and Estonia, amongst other countries, broadened his cultural exposure and introduced him to different ways of life beyond those he knows at home.
Jishnu is also able to live on campus and pursue enriching extracurricular experiences in dance, sports and academic clubs.
“I’m grateful that I can focus on learning and experience university more fully,” Jishnu says. “These diverse opportunities have shaped the person I hope to become.”
The bursary was made possible by the generosity of benefactors, faculty and supporters who raised S$1.2 million at the faculty’s 95th Anniversary Charity Golf event. The funds now help students like Jishnu pursue their studies and aspirations with greater confidence.
