Can salt power a refrigerator? 🧂❄️

Three teenagers from India have shown that innovation can start with a surprisingly simple idea.

Their invention, Thermavault, is a portable refrigerator that uses a salt-based chemical reaction to cool its contents without electricity. The team developed it with a practical goal: helping transport vaccines and medical supplies to rural areas where electricity may not be readily available.

The story is a powerful reminder that energy innovation isn't only about renewable generation or new technologies. It is also about energy access, efficiency, resilience and finding smarter ways to solve real-world challenges.

The renewable energy transition is no longer just about building more wind turbines and solar farms. It is about having the people who can make the transition happen.
A new analysis by Global Energy Monitor highlights the scale of the opportunity in the Mediterranean:
🌍 552 GW of utility-scale wind and solar capacity is announced or under development.
⚡ 361.3 GW of that capacity could be operational by 2030.
💰 An estimated US$792 billion in investment will be needed to realise the region’s planned wind and solar projects.

But turning gigawatts of potential into operating projects requires more than technology.
