students spent time with residents from Thye Hua Kwan Moral Charities, a welfare home that provides care, rehabilitation and support for individuals with multiple disabilities, sharing meaningful conversations and taking part in interactive activities that fostered connection, empathy and understanding.

What did they learn from the experience? From building connections to understanding different perspectives, hear our students reflect on how volunteering has shaped their understanding of empathy, inclusion and community.

Because sometimes, the most meaningful lessons happen beyond the classroom. 🌱

🌏 From to Amsterdam! 🇳🇱

Congratulations to Kieran Anthini Abraham, from the Bachelor of Cybersecurity, and Fan Zhang, from the Bachelor of Information Technology, on reaching the Grand Final of HACKaSTONE, a global AI-for-Education competition for tertiary students! 🎉

Their project, Primoria, explores how artificial intelligence can do more than answer questions. By adapting learning pathways and helping students build their understanding over time, Primoria aims to make learning more personalised and supportive.

This October, the team will head to Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam to present their project on the global stage, with guidance and mentorship from Dr Randy Zhu, Lecturer in Information Technology, throughout the competition.

We are excited to see Kieran and Fan Zhang bring their ideas to the Grand Final. All the best to the team! 🚀

Entrepreneurship is more than starting a business. It is also about understanding the behaviours, decisions and environments that shape entrepreneurial journeys.

At Research Spotlight Series #5, Dr Hina Munir, Lecturer in Business at , will reflect on her research into behavioural entrepreneurship and explore where the field could go next. How can we help students make informed decisions about their future? 🎓

On 1 October, welcomed Education and Career Guidance (ECG) counsellors from schools across Singapore for a closer look at our programs, student experiences and learning facilities.

Our guests heard directly from students about university life and explored our campus, including the newly opened Broodstock and Larviculture Facility and our Psychology Clinic. Joseph Angelo, Manager, Laboratory and Dr Victor Wong, Manager, Psychology and Lecturer in Clinical Psychology also shared how these facilities support hands on learning and research.

The visit sparked meaningful conversations on how we can better guide students as they navigate their education options and prepare for their next chapter. We look forward to strengthening these partnerships and supporting more students in pursuing their aspirations. 💙

What is it like to be an aquaculture researcher? These students got to try it out for a day. 🐟🔬🌊

As part of the SG Youth Plan by National Youth Council Singapore – a five-year roadmap to help youths thrive in a changing world, our Careers team welcomed 10 students from Republic Polytechnic visited for a job taster where they took an immersive look into aquaculture research.

From exploring our research facilities to learning about fish health, water quality and sustainable aquaculture practices, participants got a firsthand look at how science and research contribute to food innovation and sustainability.

We hope the experience sparked new ideas about careers in science, research and environmental sustainability.

What is Teachers’ Day without the students and teachers who make our community what it is?💙

Our Teachers’ Day celebration brought students and staff together to celebrate the educators who inspire, support and shape the student experience at .

From heartfelt messages on our love letter pedestal to a special performance of Count on Me by the JCU Music Club, the celebration was filled with meaningful moments of appreciation.

Our Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Carole-Anne Upton, also acknowledged the dedication of our academics, while Dr Kim Lim Tan, Mr Harry Klass and Mr Michael Joyce shared their passion for transforming student lives as nominees for the JCU DVC Gen AI in Curriculum Award, which recognises innovative GenAI-enabled teaching practices.

The celebrations continued with refreshments, a group photo and a fun round of mini disc golf led by Mr Lance Dubos. ⛳

Dr Peter Chew, our Associate Professor in Psychology, has been appointed as a Council Member of the National Council on Problem Gambling - Singapore (NCPG) for a three-year term.

The NCPG brings together expertise from fields including psychology, psychiatry, social services, counselling, law and rehabilitative services to support Singapore’s efforts to address problem gambling.

Drawing on his expertise in behavioural addictions, Dr Peter will work with fellow Council members to support efforts to address problem gambling in Singapore. look forward to seeing his expertise contribute to this important area of work. Congratulations, Dr Chew!
