ITI - Intercultural Theatre Institute

ITI - Intercultural Theatre Institute Based in Singapore, ITI trains artists who want to make original, impactful contemporary theatre. Co-founded by Kuo Pao Kun and T. Sasitharan.

Sasitharan, ITI is a unique enterprise in theatre training, human understanding and raising social and cultural awareness. An independent theatre school for contemporary artists, conceived as a unique and unprecedented enterprise in theatre training, social and cultural interaction, and human understanding. ITI and its Acting Programme began as the Theatre Training & Research Programme (TTRP), est

ablished in 2000 by renowned dramatist, Kuo Pao Kun (1939–2002), and current Director, T. ITI is founded on the belief that theatre would have little meaning if it is not connected to life and society. It must make a difference and have a social impact. Its Professional Diploma in Intercultural Theatre (Acting) features an intercultural learning methodology, set to rigorous standards, to develop skills in performance and original theatremaking. Through this, ITI aims to train socially engaged artists who will contribute meaningfully to their cultures and communities, at the same time are capable of working across cultural, linguistic, social and national boundaries.

by Vanessa Wu (‘17)
Presented as part of the Final Year Individual Project (FYiP)

The FYiP is one of the defining milestones in ITI’s actor-training curriculum. Drawing on their training in Theatre, Movement, Voice, and Humanities, third-year students are challenged to write, design, direct, and perform an original work. From the moment they arrive at ITI, they begin thinking about and preparing for this project. Part performance, part creative experimentation — each student finding their own voice, on their own terms.

The Caucasian Chalk Circle (2005)
Directed by William Sun Huizhu
Cast: Maria Au Mong Chao, Felimon Blanco, Hung Pei Ching, Miyuki Kamimura, Adrianna Koralewska, Chris Lee Ban Loong, Melissa Leung Hiu Tuen, Mohamed Kunju Noushad, Xiao Jian

In the midst of betrayal, war, and confusion, a baby cries — and one woman answers. Fleeing through wind and snow, evading the Fat Prince’s army of Ironshirts, Grusha carries the abandoned child across the mountains towards home. But can she protect him from the forces that pursue them, and what fate awaits them at journey’s end?

This lively production of Brecht’s well-loved classic was performed in English and Mandarin, with subtitles in both languages — bringing together nine actor-students from Macau, the Philippines, Taiwan, Japan, Poland, Singapore, Hong Kong, India, and China. It was staged by the 2nd graduating cohort of the Theatre Training and Research Programme (TTRP) - now known as ITI.

Among the cast is Mohamed Kunju Noushad, who returned to ITI years later to direct The Cyclist (2018), and Felimon Blanco, the interim head of the ITI alumni association and co-founder of inITIate PH – a testament to the lasting bond many alumni maintain with the Institute.

Unending Encounter: Reclaiming The Past And Reclaiming The Present
by Ramassamy S. (‘16)

Ramassamy shares “As an individual belonging to the Tamil tradition and culture, I pursue to search for my identity by retracing the culture and collective consciousness of ‘Tamil identity’, for which I intend to use the theatre space. My performance will be an experimental theatre activity through which I attempt to demonstrate the artefacts of Tamil identity, culture and tradition.”

He has run his own theatre company out of India since 2013.

23 years ago, the Theatre Training and Research Programme, which would later become ITI, staged its very first Final Year Production, bringing together nine actor-students for an ambitious historical drama.

Tiger Tally (2003)
Directed by Ma Hui Tian and Jean Ng
Artistic Advisor: Goh Lay Kuan
Cast: Jose Ku Ieng Un, Zelda Tatiana Ng, Andy Ng Wai-shek, Lin Pei-Ann, Peter Sau, Sim Pern Yiau, Leanne Ong Teck Lian, Walter Leung, Yeo Yann Yann

Set in 257BC during the Warring States era, Tiger Tally is a sweeping drama of loyalty, sacrifice, and political intrigue. In the twentieth year of the reign of the King of Wei, a dangerous plot unfolds: Lord Xinling and Lady Ruji conspire to seize the other half of the royal tiger tally — the token of military authority — in order to mobilise the army to the aid of the besieged people of Zhao. When the conspiracy is exposed, lives hang in the balance, and the cost of doing what is right becomes painfully clear.

The production was co-helmed by Ma Hui Tian, former senior professor at the Central Academy of Drama in Beijing. A specialist in the Stanislavskian tradition, he had previously directed Tiger Tally at the Singapore Festival of Arts 1988, making this 2003 production a meaningful homecoming for the work.

The cast hailed from Macau, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Malaysia — a true embodiment of ITI's intercultural vision from the very beginning.

What happens at the intersection of human grief and ecological extinction? In the world premiere of Australian playwright Andrew Sutherland’s play, weather changes converge on the equator as a mother searches for a lost son, humans look for otters, and a merlion keeps track of change. Performed by ITI’s 2019 graduating cohort, this production was a moving exploration of human relationships with other humans, animals and nature, against the backdrop of climate change.

As playwright Andrew Sutherland noted, the work seeks to find “vital and unsentimental imaginings (and enactments) of hope-as-survival” even in the most ambivalent of times.
