🏆 Congratulations to A/Prof Zhou Wentao on being conferred Singapore's highest honour in nursing, the President's Award for Nurses! An Advanced Practice Nurse (APN), educator and nurse leader, she has dedicated her career to preparing APNs for Singapore's evolving healthcare needs.

Meet Ru Yan, one of our Master of Nursing Class of 2026 graduates, soon to begin her journey as an Advanced Practice Nurse (APN).

For Ru Yan, returning to NUS Nursing for her Master's felt like coming full circle. "It was both nostalgic and rewarding to meet nursing lecturers who had taught me during my undergraduate years and to reconnect with the familiar campus environment," she shares.

Becoming an APN has been her career aspiration since her undergraduate days, and after 11 years in the General Surgery ward, that goal has taken clear shape. "While I found bedside nursing incredibly meaningful, I also wanted to broaden my scope of practice and make a greater impact on patient care," she explains. "Becoming an APN allows me to combine my clinical experience with advanced assessment, decision-making, and evidence-based practice."

She'll begin her one-year APN internship this August in acute care surgery and trauma, aiming to deepen her clinical expertise and sharpen her critical thinking as she prepares to step fully into the role.

Congratulations, Ru Yan! You’ve come full circle, and we look forward to seeing your nursing career go even further! 🎓💙

After graduating with a diploma in Pharmaceutical Science, Ian knew he wanted a career rooted in human touch and care. He pursued a four-year Nursing undergraduate programme while balancing a demanding double major in Psychology. One of our top-performing graduates, Ian was awarded the Thio Kok Foe and Choo Kim Beng Prize in Nursing.

At NUS, Ian shaped his journey around combining clinical care with an understanding of how patients think and feel, believing that good care means looking after both the body and the mind. As Project Director of Project Iris, Ian led activities for children with cancer and their families, creating moments of joy beyond the hospital setting.

Ian's belief in holistic care was further strengthened during his clinical attachment at Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital. Caring for elderly, bedbound patients with limited opportunities for physical interaction or social engagement, he applied palliative care approaches through the Namaste Care Programme and spent time talking with patients and their families—learning that compassion and presence can be as important as clinical interventions in nursing.

Ian will begin his career as a pediatric nurse at KK Women's and Children's Hospital, where he hopes to combine psychological insight with clinical expertise to deliver truly patient-centred care.

Meet Maisarah, one of our NUS Nursing Class of 2026 graduates and winner of the NUS Achievement Award for Arts Production of the Year.

Together with NUS Ilsa Tari and her external interest group Rumah Rima, Maisarah co-created Ku Kelek Ku Dukung—a production weaving together Malay Dance and Pantun to challenge the audience's thinking of "tradition" vs "modernity", tracing Malay customs from birth to death. "We poured our heart and soul into this production," she shares, "to bring Pantun, an art form I hold dearly, onto the big stage."

That same instinct to carry and hold space for others is what drew her to nursing. "I chose nursing because I wanted to be there for people in their most vulnerable moments," she says. "Nursing is a gateway for me to offer comfort and strength to those who may need it."

At NUS, Maisarah didn't just carry her craft—she carried curiosity too, picking up Spanish and Arabic, pushing past old sports injuries to learn Silat, and building friendships that made her NUS experience especially meaningful.

Looking ahead, she hopes to keep carrying that same spirit forward—caring for patients, shaping the next generation of nurses, and living without limits.

To her family, educators, and friends: "All my achievements are a product of your love and encouragement. I would not have reached where I am today without you."

For Joel Nai, giving back has never been a stretch. As a child, his late grandmother instilled in him one guiding principle: 做好人 (be a good person). His parents later deepened that foundation by introducing him to charity work from a young age, shaping the values he'd carry into uni life and beyond.

Since 2022, Joel has made it an annual tradition to organise a major charity initiative around his birthday. Over the years, that's meant fundraising breakfasts for low-income households, care packs for children at KK Women's and Children's Hospital, and Household Blessings, a long-term independent charity initiative he set up to deliver essential household items to vulnerable families. This year's drive was deeply personal. After his family dog, Coco, passed away after 10 years by his side, Joel dedicated his fundraiser to rescued animals—donating supplies to SPCA, Action for Singapore Dogs, and Causes for Animals Singapore.

Alongside his Nursing major, he pursued a minor in Public Health. "Nursing enables me to care for patients at an individual level," he shares, "while Public Health gives me a broader perspective on the factors that shape health outcomes across communities."

As he begins his nursing journey in Changi General Hospital, Joel hopes to show others that making a difference doesn't require extraordinary resources. "Everyone has something to offer. Use your skills to give back, and know that you too can make a difference."

The experiences and dreams that shape us often begin in childhood.

For Brian Ang, it was a lifelong dream of working in healthcare that didn’t fade even after a successful 25-year career as an actuary. For Hafiz Maruf Akbar, it was a childhood experience during the 2004 tsunami that set him on a path towards international affairs. Though their journeys unfolded differently, both ultimately chose careers that reflected the passions and convictions they had carried with them for years.

As we celebrate the Class of , Brian and Hafiz's stories remind us that learning has no deadline, and that courage, resilience and purpose can lead to meaningful new beginnings at any stage of life. More than a celebration of their achievements, their journeys embody the spirit of lifelong learning at NUS and the many ways our graduates are making a difference by staying true to what matters most to them. 📚 Our faculty Associate Professor Piyanee Yobas and Associate Professor Jeannette Ignacio have launched a new book!

Launched last Saturday at the 4th Global Summit for Mental Health Advocates and 2nd Global Summit for Youths organised by Silver Ribbon Singapore, "Psychosocial Interventions for Chronic Illness: An Avenue to Psychological Well-Being" explores how psychosocial care can support the emotional and psychological well-being of people living with chronic illnesses.

Published by World Scientific Publishing, the book brings together the latest evidence, theoretical frameworks and practical strategies on interventions such as mindfulness, resilience-building, social support and digital health. It highlights an important message: caring for chronic illness means caring for the whole person—not just treating the disease.

We are proud of A/Prof Yobas, A/Prof Ignacio and all the contributors whose work is helping to advance more holistic approaches to chronic illness care.

We're excited that Project Fuan is returning to Timor-Leste in two days!

Following its successful first run in 2025, Project Fuan continues its mission to improve healthcare literacy and access for local communities in Timor-Leste.

On its inaugural mission in July 2025, a team of 9 students, led by Nursing students Jeanne Tan, Tisha Leong and Ng Ting Hong, brought interactive lessons on hygiene, nutrition and emotional well-being to local schools, while also running health and dental check-ups for the wider community.

Together, they reached over 500 students, supported 280 medical patients and 210 dental patients, and screened 409 children across three local communities.

🎉 Congratulations to Dr Lubna Shah on successfully defending her dissertation!

A mental health nurse, counsellor and educator at heart, Dr Lubna researched a simple, phone-based support programme to help mothers through pregnancy and early motherhood — especially those facing extra challenges like financial stress, single parenthood, depression, or caring for a baby with health needs.

Backed by a Ministry of Health NMRC grant, her work shows how technology can help mums get the mental health support they need, when they need it. Her research also produced three published papers with her team. 👏

So proud of you, Dr Lubna — educator, researcher, and mental health advocate! 💛
