Established in 2005, the Alice Lee Centre for Nursing Studies (NUS Nursing) at the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine is the only institution in Singapore to offer an undergraduate nursing programme for A-level holders and polytechnic graduates. It offers a range of academic nursing degree programmes from baccalaureate to doctoral levels. The NUS Nursing programme is leading in Asia and ranks among the best in the world. NUS Nursing’s principal mission is to nurture the next generation of transformational nurse leaders for clinical practice, education and research, to meet the dynamic challenges of the healthcare system. It will achieve this by providing quality evidence-based education within a student-centred learning environment, and through inter-professional education.

🎉 Congratulations to Assistant Professor Vivien Wu, who was inducted as a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing (FAAN) on 10 October 2026!

Helping older adults stay healthy, active and independent for longer is the driving force behind her research. From developing a community-based e-health programme incorporating the Care4Senior mobile app, which has reached more than 20 ageing facilities, to scaling up a Community Dance Programme across 10 Active Ageing Centres, her work is helping older adults better manage their health and stay active and connected.

Her induction recognises her contributions to healthy ageing and community care, and places her among an international community of nursing leaders working to improve health outcomes.

Research isn't just about learning theories; it's about knowing how to apply them. For many Year 4 Nursing students embarking on their thesis journey, that's where the real challenge begins.

That's why Year 4 programme director Assoc Prof Shefaly Shorey, together with the AI Centre for Educational Technologies (AICET), created INSPIRE-AI, a personalised learning buddy that supports Honours research students by using AI-powered prompts and guidance based on NUS Nursing’s learning resources.

Rather than giving students the answers, it helps them think critically, ask better questions, and develop their own research solutions for their Honours thesis. So when they meet their supervisor, they come with clearer and more focused questions and spend more of that valuable consultation time having deeper discussions on their research.

NUS Nursing has retained its position at #4 globally and #1 in Asia for Nursing in the 2026 ShanghaiRanking Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS). GRAS is one of the major global university rankings by academic discipline, assessing around 20,000 subject units from about 2,000 universities across 100 countries and regions. Its indicators span world-class faculty, research output and quality, research impact and international collaboration.

Raising five children, working full-time as a Senior Nurse Manager and pursuing a doctorate might sound impossible, but for Year 2 Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) student Choo Pey Jia, it is possible — with the right support. At home, her husband and children make room for her studies, while the DNP’s two-year, part-time work-study structure allows her to continue working while applying what she learns directly to her workplace.

As Singapore looks at how we can better support people to have children while continuing to pursue their aspirations, Pey Jia’s story shows what is doable when family, work and learning can fit together.

What does a day in Oxford look like for a nurse scientist from Singapore? 🌞😎

Join senior tutor Dr Jeremy Cheng for a glimpse into his life as a postdoctoral fellow at the National Perinatal Epidemiology Unit, Nuffield Department of Women's & Reproductive Health, University of Oxford.

Dr Jeremy's work in health economics focuses on improving the lives of mothers and newborns. He is supported by the NUS-Overseas Postdoctoral Fellowship under the Ministry of Education's Singapore Teaching and Academic Research Talent (START) Award.

"My time in Oxford has given me the opportunity to learn from leading international researchers including my mentor Professor Oliver Rivero-Arias, Professor of Health Economic at Oxford, exchange ideas, and share my work on a global stage," he shares.🌍

For NUS Alice Lee Centre for Nursing Studies alumna Janani, care doesn’t stop at the hospital. It starts with showing up — for patients, for seniors, and for communities. ❤️

A family health crisis, when her mother suffered a stroke, sparked her desire to care for others. Volunteering when she was an NUS student then opened her eyes to the needs beyond the hospital.

Since 2024, Janani has volunteered with Trigenerational HomeCare, an NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine alumni-founded initiative, where she has seen how meaningful connections between youth and seniors can combat isolation and preserve dignity.

Her Youth Corps Singapore journey — including a Community Internship with TriGen — helped her gain confidence to turn compassion into action.

One moment stayed with her: at the Youth Corps Hearts Connect Finale, youth leaders and seniors created handmade decorations together. “Watching youth guide seniors with the same patience that parents show young children was incredibly fulfilling. It was a beautiful, full-circle moment of care.”

Janani is today a nurse at Singapore General Hospital and continues volunteering with TriGen@SGH, working to improve health literacy and support seniors in the community.

A historic milestone for NUS: Professor Lydia Lau has become the first faculty member in the University's history to be promoted to Full Professor on the Educator Track. 🎉

Since joining NUS Nursing in 2011, Prof Lydia has advanced healthcare education through the Longitudinal Patient Experience programme, the Entrustable Professional Activities (EPA) framework for Nursing, and the use of immersive virtual reality in healthcare education. Her work spans the education of students in Nursing, Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy.

Her impact extends across Singapore. As Co-Chair of the Ministry of Health's national RN-EPA workgroup, Prof Lydia led the implementation of a common EPA framework across Singapore's nursing institutions, strengthening how future nurses are trained and assessed. Internationally, she is the sole nursing representative on the International Competency-Based Health Professions Education Collaborators committee.

Her promotion recognises a career of turning educational scholarship into changes in how healthcare professionals learn—at NUS, across Singapore and internationally.

As Director of Student Affairs at NUS Nursing, Dr Fui Ping has been a dedicated mentor and champion for our students, creating opportunities for them to learn beyond the classroom—from engaging seniors and vulnerable communities to gaining valuable exposure overseas.
