Asst Prof Michael Yeo (NTU History) has been awarded the Global Research Excellence Award for Travel (GREAT) grant, which supports NTU faculty in undertaking international research engagements that enhance the University’s global research profile.

As part of the grant, Asst Prof Yeo will travel to the UK in December 2026, where he will deliver an invited lecture at the World History Seminar Series at the University of Cambridge. His talk, “Between Sea and Jungle: Port Towns and the Making of North Borneo”, draws on his research interests in Southeast Asian history, urban and port-city history, and the histories of colonialism and empire.

The School of Humanities and NTU Asian School of the Environment at Nanyang Technological University Singapore, invite applications for a fully funded four-year PhD position under Mining Mineral Life: Extracting the Energy Transition in Southeast Asia, led by Principal Investigator Assistant Professor Dr Adam Bobbette.

🌏 Open to applicants worldwide, this opportunity welcomes candidates from all academic backgrounds, with those holding at least one degree in the humanities especially encouraged to apply.

Asst Prof Luke Lu (LMS) has been awarded the Global Research Excellence Award for Travel (GREAT) grant, which supports NTU faculty in undertaking international research engagements that enhance the University’s global research profile.

He will travel to KCL, UCL, and University of Southampton, UK as part of the grant. Luke is primarily interested in approaches to interactional sociolinguistics and ethnography, pertaining to issues such as transnational mobility, education, language rights, language planning and policy, and ethnicity.

Join Ho Wan HONG, Research Associate in the History Department at Nanyang Technological University, for a seminar on *Feeding the Crowd: Rice Rationing Policy in Hong Kong (1945–1954)*.
Food provisioning systems offer a unique lens through which to understand governance, social stability, and post-war reconstruction. Focusing on Hong Kong's rice rationing system between 1945 and 1954, this talk examines how the colonial government managed rice imports and distribution amid shifting regional geopolitics, supply challenges, and changing consumer demands. By situating Hong Kong within wider Asian rice procurement networks, the seminar sheds light on the flexibility and constraints of food policy in the early post-war period.

We are pleased to share the publication of 𝙇𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙪𝙖𝙜𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙄𝙙𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙖𝙢𝙤𝙣𝙜 𝙀𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙚 𝙎𝙩𝙪𝙙𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙨: 𝙂𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙙 𝙃𝙞𝙜𝙝-𝙁𝙡𝙮𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙞𝙣 𝙎𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙖𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙚 by Assistant Professor Luke Lu (NTU Linguistics and Multilingual Studies). Drawing on linguistic ethnography and Bourdieu’s concepts of capital and social fields, the book examines how high-performing students from Raffles Institution navigate language, identity, aspirations and social status within Singapore’s elite education landscape.

The research explores topics including state scholarships, peer relationships, migration, xenophobia and the use of Singlish, highlighting the interplay between global aspirations and local rootedness. The book contributes to scholarship in sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, elite education and migration studies.

In Out of Chaos, Prof Jon Wilson offers a new account of how the modern nation state and present-day world order emerged in the aftermath of the Second World War, challenging conventional narratives of its development.

The talk will be followed by comments from Prof Tan Tai Yong, Prof Srinath Raghavan, and Assoc Prof Kei Koga, with Dr Swapna Kona Nayudu as moderator.

This event is a collaboration between the Global Asia Research Centre, NTU Public Policy and Global Affairs, and NTU History.

Care is often seen as a moral good, a professional duty or a selfless act. But care is also work — interpretive, embodied, relational and unevenly distributed.

What happens when needs are difficult to recognise, responsibilities are contested, resources are limited, and outcomes remain uncertain?

The conference explores how stories, images, testimony, memory and lived experiences shape the ways care is recognised, practised, distributed and valued.

Join us as we reflect on the complexities of care, paying close attention to the experiences that often go unseen, remain contested or resist easy answers.
