Discover what the journey is like through Shamini, a graduate from the MA programme, as she shares her experience.

'My time at the History department at NTU SoH was highly instrumental, playing a significant part in steering me towards my current pursuit of history. The faculty and friends that I made in the department were dedicated and passionate about their research and exploration of Southeast Asian history, inspiring me with the diversity of their insights and approaches and willingness to think critically and engage with interdisciplinary methods. While I was new to the field of history when I entered SoH for my master's, the department quickly put me at ease and encouraged me to take my research further. I am currently a PhD student in a joint programme at NUS (Southeast Asian Studies) and King's College London (History), but still retain close friendships and fond memories of my time at the history department at SoH, where my journey into the field began.'

Hear from Dr Alasdair Chi, PhD in History (Class of 2023), as he reflects on his experience and research journey with us.

'My time as a SoH Graduate in NTU after completing my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees overseas has helped in forging connections with Singaporeans and international scholars who’ve chosen to pursue their graduate studies here, as we seek to better understand the shared history of this region and the world together.

My experiences at SoH have also helped me anchor my research with a firm grounding in historical thought and theory both as a student and in teaching others these subjects after years of specialised study in archaeology.'

On 12 May 2026, the School of Humanities at Nanyang Technological University hosted His Excellency Mr. , Ambassador of France to Singapore, at the launch of the Second Major in Modern Languages (French Track), an event organised by the French module of the Centre for Modern Language (CML). Held at the Wee Cho Yaw Plaza Auditorium, the event marked a significant milestone in NTU’s continued commitment to global education and multilingual learning.

In his address, H.E. Mr. Marchisio spoke about the enduring heritage and contemporary relevance of the French language and Francophone culture in the Asia-Pacific region.

“French is the fourth most-spoken language in the world, with around 400 million speakers across five continents. It is a language of growth and opportunities. It is an official or working language in many major international organisations, but it is also a language of science, entrepreneurship, engineering, and finance.” He applauded NTU for expanding the French Language programme and opening up more opportunities for students to learn French.
