Why does Singapore feel hotter today?

In a Money FM 89.3 interview, Lee Kong Chian Professor of Urban Climate Winston Chow from the SMU College of Integrative Studies explains how rapid urbanisation has contributed to rising heat in Singapore — from the replacement of trees and mangroves with concrete and asphalt, to heat generated by air conditioning, vehicles and human activity.

He also shares why greenery plays an important role in cooling the environment, and how conversations, education and community support can help people better manage climate anxiety.

AI and Web3 are often discussed separately — but what happens when they come together?

In this article, Associate Professor of Computer Science Zhu Feida from SMU School of Computing and Information Systems shares how AI can create value, while Web3 can provide the trust and incentive structures needed for more sustainable digital collaboration.

His insights explore what this means for data ownership, decentralised computing, fairness and participation in the digital economy — and how programmes such as the SMU Master of IT in Business (MITB) prepare professionals to navigate these emerging shifts.

Can AI help detect early signs of cognitive decline before symptoms become clinically visible?

For Teh Seng Khoon (PhD in Computer Science, Class of 2025 and Master of IT in Business, Class of 2018), this question began as a capstone project — and grew into a long-term research journey on AI-driven cognitive health detection.

His work uses behavioural data from home sensors, such as movement, sleep and daily activity patterns, to explore how AI can support earlier detection of mild cognitive impairment.

The story highlights how SMU’s postgraduate programmes combine technology, analytics and real-world application to help professionals build solutions that address complex societal challenges.

Vietnam’s population aged 65 and above is projected to more than double by 2044 — from 9.3 million today to 20.5 million.

As the country prepares for one of Southeast Asia’s most rapid demographic shifts, SMU’s Longevity Societies and Economies Institute (LSEI) has signed a five-year partnership with Vietnam Association of Medical Biological Research and Application (VAMBRA) to support longevity research, innovation and capacity building.

Formalised during Vietnamese President To Lam’s official visit to Singapore, the collaboration will focus on digital health technologies, AI and data analytics training, and building capacity among health system leaders and researchers across Vietnam.

Launched against the backdrop of ageing populations across Asia, LSEI brings together health, care, economics and labour productivity perspectives to support more holistic and sustainable approaches to longevity.

For SMU, the partnership reflects how a global city university in Asia can translate research into applied regional collaboration — helping societies prepare earlier, age better and unlock the full potential of longer lives.

When life feels overwhelming, where do students turn for support, and what role might technology play?

At a recent panel hosted by the Mrs Wong Kwok Leong Student Wellness Centre, experts explored how AI is shaping the way young people reflect, seek help and navigate mental wellbeing.

The discussion offered a balanced perspective: while technology can support reflection and make help feel more accessible, empathy, trust and meaningful human connection remain at the heart of wellbeing.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is no longer just reshaping how students write essays, code, or optimise their calendars. Quietly but rapidly, it has entered a far more intimate space — how we reflect, cope, and seek emotional support. As algorithm-driven tools become deeply embedded in our daily rou...

How do we prepare students for the realities of today’s business world?

As Asia plays a growing role in the global economy, business education must reflect the markets, industries and challenges graduates will actually encounter.

Through SMU’s Centre for Case Learning Excellence, SMU is supporting Thai academics in developing locally relevant and Asia-focused teaching cases grounded in real-world business scenarios.

By bringing regional realities into the classroom, case-based learning helps students strengthen decision-making, problem-solving and leadership skills for an increasingly complex business environment.
